The San Diego Padres try to stay hot when they face the host Miami Marlins in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday night. These two teams are on divergent paths, but let’s take a closer look at this series to help you make some winning wagers.

San Diego (64-52) is on a five-game winning streak, coming off a sweep of a road series with the Pittsburgh Pirates this week. The Padres are in second place in the NL West, trailing the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers by 2.5 games. They are also leading the race for the Wild Card in the National League, sitting a game above the Arizona Diamondbacks for the first spot.

Miami is near the bottom of the MLB standings, sitting in last place in the NL East, nine games behind the fourth-place Washington Nationals. The Marlins (43-73) dropped three of four at home to the Cincinnati Reds this week, including a 10-inning setback on Thursday night.

The Padres vs Marlins series odds favor the visitors, including the opening game on Friday night. San Diego is -119 on the moneyline to pick up the straight-up win in the opener, while Miami is +109.

  • Betting on the run line will get you the Marlins at -145 when getting 1.5 runs, while the Padres are getting +125 odds when giving those runs. The over/under for Friday is set at 8.5 runs, with -115 odds for the under and -105 for the over.

The series will start with a 7:40 p.m. ET contest on Friday night, followed by a 4:10 p.m. ET first pitch on Saturday. The series finale is scheduled for a 1:40 p.m. ET start on Sunday, with all games being played at loanDepot Park in Miami.

Pitching Matchups

Game 1: Martin Perez (San Diego) vs Edward Cabrera (Miami)

The Padres will have veteran lefty Martin Perez on the mound for Friday’s opener, as he makes his second start for San Diego after being acquired from the Pirates. Perez is 2-5 on the season with a 4.95 ERA, striking out 70 in 89 innings over 17 starts. He’s looking for more of the same from his debut with the Padres, as he went six innings against the Colorado Rockies last Saturday and allowed one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking none.

Miami will send Edward Cabrera to the mound for his 12th start of the season. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 5.96 ERA, having struck out 64 in 48.1 innings of work. Cabrera was solid in his last start, throwing five shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, giving up just three hits while striking out eight and walking two. It was his third straight start of at least five innings and recording at least six strikeouts.

Game 2: Matt Waldron (San Diego) vs Roddery Munoz (Miami)

Right-hander Matt Waldron will get the call to start Saturday’s contest for San Diego. Waldron is 7-9 with a 3.79 ERA this season, recording 116 strikeouts in 128.1 innings over 23 starts. He earned the win in his last start, going 5.2 innings against the Rockies on Sunday and giving up one run on two hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Rookie Roddery Munoz will start the middle game of the series for the Marlins, bringing a 2-6 record and 5.68 ERA to his 14th start and 15th overall appearance of the campaign. The 24-year-old righty has been up and down in his initial MLB season and is hoping for a bounceback performance in this one. In his last outing, Munoz lasted just 3.2 innings against the Reds on Monday, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits, including two home runs, while striking out two and walking three.

Game 3: Dylan Cease (San Diego) vs Max Meyer (Miami)

The series finale could be one of the lower MLB scores of the day if right-hander Dylan Cease has his stuff for the Padres. Cease is 11-8 with a 3.40 ERA this season, leading the majors in strikeouts with 176 in 137.2 innings over 24 starts. Cease is hoping for a longer stint than his last start, which ended after one inning due to a three-hour rain delay on Tuesday against the Pirates. It was just over two weeks ago that Cease threw a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals, and he has given up just one run over a combined 28.2 innings spanning his last five starts.

Righty Max Meyer will be on the mound for the series finale for Miami. The 25-year-old is 2-2 with a 5.10 ERA this season, striking out 26 in 30 innings over six starts. Meyer has struggled since being called back up from Triple-A in late July, giving up at least three runs in each of his three starts. His last outing was against the Reds on Tuesday, as he went four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking three.

Padres’ Bats More Potent than Marlins’ Attack

While San Diego’s pitching staff has been very good of late, it’s the offensive attack of the team that has the Padres vs Marlins series odds leaning its way. The Padres come into this series with the top team batting average in baseball at .265, with San Diego ranking 11th in the majors in scoring with 548 runs. By contrast, Miami is 29th in runs scored with 423, while the Marlins’ team batting average of .238 ranks 20th.

San Diego outfielder Jurickson Profar has become a star this season, leading the Padres with a .298 batting average, 19 home runs, and 71 RBI, ranking in the top 30 in baseball in each category.

Profar also has 19 doubles and has scored 66 times, but he’s trying to get out of a mini-slump. He’s batting just .190 in six games in August, including going 0-for-6 over the last two games against Pittsburgh. He has been able to get on base, however, getting hit by a pitch four times in the three-game series against the Pirates, including twice in Thursday’s win.

Third baseman Jake Burger has been the most dangerous batter in the Marlins’ lineup for much of the season, and that was true against the Reds this week as well. Burger was only 4-for-17 at the plate in the three-game series, but three of those hits were for extra bases, including a pair of home runs in Miami’s only win of the series on Wednesday. Burger is batting .240 this season with 13 doubles, a triple, 19 home runs, 49 RBI and 42 runs scored.

Bet on San Diego to Continue Hot Streak

After a closer look at this series, it’s pretty obvious that your MLB picks and parlays should include the Padres picking up multiple wins. San Diego is one of the top teams in the National League this season, and it has first place in the NL West in its sights.

  • Miami is playing for next season at this point, and that will show up on the field as well. Bet on the Padres to win in every game of this series.
