Cardinals Looking To Retain Paul Goldschmidt Beyond 2024
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote that the Cardinals have discussed keeping Paul Goldschmidt for the rest of his career.
They’ve been happy with his consistency at the plate and enjoyed his recent MVP campaign in 2022. The organization has compared him to Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina. These guys stayed with St. Louis for an extended period of time and retired with the club without going anywhere else.
While Goldschmidt hasn’t been one of the MLB home run leaders this season, he’s progressing and playing better lately. That could be enough to get him a contract extension in St. Louis.
Royals Fans Can’t Wait For Jac Caglianone
The Kansas City Royals selected University of Florida prospect Jac Caglianone as the sixth overall pick of the most recent MLB Draft.
Not even two weeks in, and the duel position player has impressed. Many major outlets believe Caglianone is currently the No. 1 prospect in Kansas City.
In his junior year of college, Caglianone added 35 home runs and hit .419 with a .544 on-base percentage. He’ll fit right in with this Kansas City club in a few years.
Kansas City is trending in the right direction at the MLB level and in the farm system. The MLB playoff odds will likely have Kansas City above many teams for years to come.

Cardinals vs. Royals Series Preview

- Miles Mikolas vs. Michael Lorenzen
The Cardinals will give the ball to Miles Mikolas for the first game of this series. Mikolas is a right-handed pitcher who has a 5.12 ERA on the season. He’s allowed a .284 ISO and wOBA of .422 to his last 94 batters and has only struck out 11.7% of those batters.
Mikolas has done well limiting walks and has still induced nearly 45% of ground balls over the last month. However, the hard contact and line drive percentages have been high over the last 30 days.
The Cardinals righty has also added just 7.1% of swinging strikes this season. The veteran doesn’t have great stuff, but he always finds a way to keep the Cardinals in the game. After all, he still has eight wins on his resume this season.
Against righties, the Royals’ projected lineup has collectively hit a .202 ISO and wOBA of .351 over the last month. In addition, Kansas City’s offense has only struck out 15.3% of the time against righties during that time. The Royals are typically aggressive against righties, and that’s a good thing against Mikolas, who is a strike-thrower.
Meanwhile, the Royals will give Michael Lorenzen the ball. Kansas City traded for Lorenzen at the MLB Trade Deadline, and they are looking for some depth. He hasn’t really provided a spark. Over the last 30 days, the right-handed pitcher has allowed a .173 ISO and wOBA of .371 to his previous 94 batters.
Lefties have even hit a .226 ISO and wOBA of .380 with 16.2% of walks.
St. Louis has gotten some good production from Alec Burleson and Tommy Pham against righties. However, nobody else in the lineup has hit a consistently high ISO and wOBA against righties over the last month.
Take the Royals in Game 1 at -112. You’ll enjoy looking at the MLB scoreboard when this game finishes.

- Andre Pallante vs. Michael Wacha
In the second matchup, Andre Pallante will get the call. He’s a righty who has walked more lefties than struck out over the last month. Still, that’s really his only big blemish.
Pallante has held his last 93 batters to a .126 ISO and wOBA of .291. He’s also induced 63.9% of ground balls and has kept fly balls below 10% over the last month. That’s extraordinary.
Pallante won’t earn many strikeouts, but he’s getting a lot of contact, resulting in easy outs.
On the other hand, the Royals will pitch Michael Wacha. Wacha, a former Cardinals pitcher, will face his old team again. While Wacha has allowed a .225 ISO and wOBA of .340 over the last month, he’s been better than his stats might represent.
Wacha has limited walks to 6.6% and has added 49.5% of ground balls with only 13.7% of line drives over the last month. He also hasn’t even allowed a ton of hard contact to both sides of the plate in the previous 30 days.
Pallante and Wacha have performed better than their recent ERAs suggest. Let’s back the Under in this game to conclude our Cardinals vs Royals MLB betting preview.
