After dropping three of four games against the Baltimore Orioles, the Toronto Blue Jays continue their road trip against the division leaders. They traded a handful of players like LHP Yusei Kikuchi (Houston) and DH Justin Turner (Seattle) at the deadline. No one in this group was listed in preseason MLB MVP odds. But it still doesn’t create sympathy for the Jays, who were supposed to contend for the top spot in the division.
It’s to show that Toronto needed a culture change with 14 different players entering the organization.
In game one, Toronto is sending one of their positive stories on their pitching staff to the hill in Kevin Gausman, however, the 2-time all-star has experienced a rough patch after allowing 28 earned runs in his last 44 innings (5.73 ERA) spanning over eight starts.
In his previous three starts, the former LSU Tiger has allowed nine earned runs in 22.2 innings (3.57 era), perhaps showing that Gausman’s numbers are heading in the right direction.
The New York Yankees are rolling after sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies in Philly, outscoring the perceived best team in the National League 27-15. If there was any doubt that the Bronx Bombers were the best team in baseball beforehand we don’t see how there can be any doubt now.
Marcus Stroman, who has been inconsistent of late, gets the start for the pinstripes in game one. Over his last seven starts, Stroman has allowed 21 earned runs in 34 innings (5.56 ERA) to go with 41 hits allowed.
The Yankees have won five straight while Toronto has dropped nine of their last 16. We recommend taking the New York Yankees in game one.
Blue Jays vs Yankees Game 2
Jose Berrios (Tor) 9-8, 3.93 vs. Carlos Rodon (NYY) 11-7, 4.34
Jose Berrios bounced back in his last outing against the Texas Rangers after allowing just one earned run in seven innings in a 7-3 Toronto win. We will learn if that was the start of a turnaround for the two-time All-Star. He comes into the game with a 4-4 record in his last eight starts and an ERA of 6.44.
The win allowed Toronto to sweep the Texas Rangers to earn their second sweep of the year. Baseball sometimes provides synergy moments we like to reminisce about after the season.
On June 15th, Carlos Rodon started against the Boston Red Sox and was rocked for five earned runs, seven hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts in five innings of work.
The Yankees dropped that game to start a run of 23 losses in their last 33 games. New York dropped four and a half games in the standings to fall behind the Baltimore Orioles who should have buried the Bombers when they had the chance.
Six weeks later Rodon got his revenge in 6.1 strong innings, allowing five hits, two earned, and one walk, while striking out seven. Not only did the win solidify a series win, but it also served as a warning to the rest of the division that New York’s slide was a missed opportunity. Again, we recommend the Yankees in game two.
Blue Jays vs Yankees Game 3
Yariel Rodriguez (Tor) 1-4, 4.31 vs. Luis Gil (NYY) 11-5, 3.20
These are the probable starters for Sunday’s series finale but with this story being written on Thursday, make sure to confirm starters before placing your MLB wager.
Rodriguez has been terrific over his last five starts with eight earned runs allowed in his previous 23 innings (3.13 ERA). Unfortunately, Toronto’s bullpen couldn’t take advantage of the quality starts, dropping two of the three games.
Gil has been terrific for the Yankees over his last four starts, allowing six earned runs in his preceding 23 innings of work (2.35 ERA). Gil has allowed just 71 hits in his 112.2 innings in 2024 but has been bit by 53 walks which leads Major League Baseball. If Rodriguez and Gil are confirmed we’ll look to the under to finish the series.
