Yankees Continue Dialing Long Distance

Only three American League teams have a lower team batting average over the last two weeks than the New York Yankees.

While a .221 average is hardly ideal, the 24 home runs during that span have certainly helped the cause.

With Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo cooling off a bit, much of the power has been supplied by Giancarlo Stanton with seven home runs in his last 12 games. The 13 walks by DJ LeMahieu over that span haven’t hurt either. His .464 on-base percentage has resulted in RBI opportunities for the New York-run producers as the Yankees have won eight of their last 13 games despite not playing their best baseball.

The Yankees have 20 more home runs than any other American League team this season. New York’s ability to drive the ball out of the park will impact the Yankees vs Red Sox series odds.

Red Sox Pitching Woes Have Returned

The Red Sox began making their way up the standings in the competitive American League East after winning eight games in a row and 12 of 14. Wins have been harder to come by recently.

Boston has split its last 12 games. Allowing 50 walks over the last 12 games has played a role in the recent struggles. Four blown saves in six opportunities haven’t helped either. That will be a part of the Yankees vs Red Sox series odds.

Nick Pivetta and Michael Wacha carried the pitching staff earlier in the season, however, in the last two weeks, they are a combined 1-1 with a 5.70 ERA to go with 29 hits and eight walks in 23.2 innings of work.

Player Josh Winckowski has stepped in to become the most consistent Red Sox starter during that time.

Five different Boston pitchers have been given opportunities to close out games during that stretch and that is a sign of a team searching for somebody to rely on at the end of games.

Who’s Hot

  • Albert Abreu, Yankees P: Abreu hasn’t allowed a run over his last six appearances. He has allowed three hits and struck out eight over seven innings of work.
  • Matt Carpenter, Yankees DH: Carpenter is hitting .429 with a double, two home runs, and five RBIs in his last four games.
  • Jarren Duran, Red Sox OF: Duren is hitting .320 with three doubles and a home run over his last six games.
  • John Schreiber, Red Sox P: Schreiber has allowed one hit and no runs over six innings in his last six appearances. Opponents are hitting .059 against him during this span.

Who’s Not

  • Tyler Danish, Red Sox P: Danish has allowed five hits and three walks in 5.2 innings over his last five games.
  • Giancarlo Stanton, Yankees OF-DH: Stanton is 3 for 21 over his last five games. Two of those hits have been home runs.
  • Jameson Taillon, Yankees P: Taillon has allowed 23 hits and 14 runs over 16 innings in his last three starts. He has allowed four home runs and opponents have a .307 batting average during that stretch.
  • Alex Verdugo, Red Sox OF: Verdugo is 4 for 21 with no extra-base hits in his last five contests.

Injury Update

First baseman Anthony Rizzo (back) is questionable while pitchers Jonathan Loaisiga (shoulder) and Ron Marinaccio (shoulder) are out until mid-July for the Yankees.

Third baseman Rafael Devers (hamstring) is questionable as is pitcher Michael Wacha (arm) while pitchers Matt Barnes (shoulder), Nathan Eovaldi (back), Garrett Whitlock (hip), and outfielder Enrique Hernandez (hip) could be out until mid-July for the Red Sox.

Yankees vs Red Sox Betting Analysis

The series could change quite a bit depending on the availability of New York’s Anthony Rizzo and Boston’s Rafael Devers. Also keep an eye on the status of Michael Wacha, the scheduled starting pitcher for Boston on Friday, after he missed his last start. Rizzo drove in six runs in the first three games of the season against the Red Sox.

Four of the last six games between the teams have been decided by two runs or less.

Eight of the last nine matchups between New York and Boston at Fenway Park featured at least eight combined runs. The total for the series opener is 8.5.

The Yankees starting pitchers lasted a total of 10 1/3 giving up 13 hits and eight runs in the three-game series between the teams in April. The Boston starters allowed 15 hits and 10 runs in 14 innings during that series.

Alex Verdugo and Xander Bogaerts are a combined 9 for 22 against the Yankees this season.

The total has gone under in four of New York’s last six games as well as in four of the last five contests for Boston.
