Trio of drivers at the top of the odds in the Xfinity Series' return to Iowa Speedway

Another week, another road course, another Xfinity Series win for Shane van Gisbergen. The rookie became just the third Xfinity Series driver to win multiple races this season. This week, the grid takes a break from the road courses and returns to ovals with a new event for 2024. The Xfinity Series is back at Iowa Speedway and the 2024 HyVee Perks 250 odds point to a prior winner as the favorite for victory.

2024 HyVee Perks 250 Odds: Favorites

🏎Justin Allgaier (+260)

Allgaier is one of the few drivers who ran multiple events at the Iowa Speedway during its previous run on the calendar from 2011 to 2019. His track record is solid from those years. In 2018, he won the first event there before finishing second in the second race of the season.

Iowa’s a shorter flat-track oval similar to Phoenix and Richmond. In Allgaier’s Xfinity race results there so far this year, he finished 29th (Phoenix) and 11th (Richmond). Not great but not bad by any means. This is banking on his history from when Iowa was still on the calendar.

🏎John Hunter Nemechek (+325)

Nemechek’s competing in the Xfinity Series for the second week in a row in Iowa. He finished eighth in Sonoma and already has a victory on the schedule this year in Las Vegas.

Like Allgaier, Nemechek has experience at the Xfinity level in Iowa. He never won at the track but had three top-10 finishes in four races from 2018 to 2019. In the Craftsman Truck Series, he won a race at Iowa Speedway in 2017. It’s not the same but still promising results at the track.

🏎Chandler Smith (+360)

Smith’s raced in four events at Iowa Speedway in his NASCAR career: one in the Craftsman Truck Series and three in the ARCA Menards Series. He’s finished in the top eight in all of them and won the Atlas 150 in the ARCA Menards Series in 2019.

His two wins in 2024 – a big reason why he’s third in the NASCAR Xfinity Series standings – came at Phoenix and Richmond. That’s a promising sign for Iowa, a similar oval to those two tracks. Smith finished seventh last week in Sonoma and should be on for another good result here.

🏎Cole Custer (+500)

The championship leader earned another top 10 finish with ninth in Sonoma. That marks his 11th top-10 finish in 14 races this season but he’s still winless in 2024. That could change with the Xfinity race today.

You have to go back to the 2013 K&N Pro Series East to find his lone win at Iowa Speedway but he’s performed well there in the Xfinity Series before.

Six races between 2017 and 2019 yielded three top-five finishes. This season he took pole position en route to fifth in Phoenix and finished 10th in Richmond. He should be near the front again at the very least.

2024 HyVee Perks 250 Odds: Sleepers

🏎Jesse Love (+1000)

At +1000, he’s not much of a sleeper but could offer a great payout. He’s fresh off a 12th-place result at his home race in Sonoma (Love hails from Menlo Park, a two-hour drive south of Sonoma Raceway).

Outside of a win in Talladega, Love’s best results in 2024 came at Phoenix (second) and Richmond (fifth). That bodes well for the rookie’s chances this weekend.

🏎Austin Hill (+1600)

Hill earned a top-five finish in Sonoma to get back on track in the Xfinity standings. He’s now second behind Custer by just 12 points.

Like Love, Smith, and Custer, Hill finished in the top 10 in both Phoenix (fourth) and Richmond (eighth) earlier this season. That’s good enough to give some confidence in a good result with these odds.

🏎Sammy Smith (+2500)

The other second-year Smith driver saw his top-five finish streak end in Sonoma. He was classified 33rd for one of his worst results of the year. That wasn’t the case earlier on in the season. He also finished in the top 10 in both Phoenix (ninth) and Richmond (ninth).

It’s not as good as some others in this group but it’s good enough to warrant consideration because of the potential payout you’d get with a win.

2024 HyVee Perks 250 Odds: Predictions

A return to a former track for the Xfinity Series provides some intrigue for NASCAR‘s second tier this weekend. A lot of drivers will be racing here for the first time since their lower-level days or years ago. It’s hard to predict but will very likely be exciting for fans.

  • Of the favorites, we like Smith (+360). His payout’s slightly better than Allgaier (+260) and Nemechek (+325) and we like his impressive track record at similar tracks this season.
  • Of the sleepers, roll with Love (+1000). It’s not a huge bump in payout but his good results in similar tracks are a good sign.
  • Our top five picks are Love (+150), Chandler Smith (-190), Hill (+240), Allgaier (-275), and Sammy Smith (+350).
