Cup Series drivers lead inaugural DoorDash 250 Odds

The Xfinity Series heads to Sonoma Raceway for the first time

The second road course race of the Xfinity Series season did not disappoint. Cole Custer earned his first win of the season by holding off Justin Allgaier after an overtime restart. This made for Custer’s first win of 2023 and put him into the top four of the standings.

Championship leader John Hunter Nemechek managed just 10th on Saturday. Austin Hill’s fifth-place finish closes the gap at the top of the Xfinity standings to just 14 points.

This week marks another road course race in Sonoma but a first for the Xfinity Series. Cup Series events have run in Sonoma since 1989, and now the Xfinity Series gets its chance.

Unsurprisingly, Cup Series drivers lead the NASCAR odds for victory this week. Here’s a look at the top picks among the DoorDash 250 odds.

Larson, Allmendinger lead Cup Series group

The Cup Series duo of Kyle Larson and AJ Allmendinger lead the way with the shortest DoorDash 250 odds (+250 each). This will be Larson’s second Xfinity Series race in 2023 after his winning drive in Darlington. He’s excelled in Sonoma in the Cup Series by scoring five straight pole positions and a win in 2021. Few drivers can match his pace historically at Sonoma.

Fellow Cup Series driver Allmendinger is a road course standout. He won his first Xfinity Series race of the season in Austin. Last year, he won there as well as Portland, Indianapolis (road course circuit), and Charlotte (road course circuit). He’s yet to win in Sonoma but he’s shown the pace on similar tracks in recent memory.

Defending Xfinity Series champion and Cup Series rookie Ty Gibbs is next at +500. He has yet to race in Sonoma before, but he did finish third in Austin earlier this year. His last Xfinity race in Charlotte saw him finish fifth. It wouldn’t be a big surprise to see him on the podium’s top step.

Custer is the Xfinity driver with the shortest odds for victory (+850). He’s raced there before in the Cup Series and managed 20th (2021) and 21st (2022). He finished 32nd in Austin but won in Portland last weekend. It’s hard to get a read on his road course prowess. But it would be a shock for him to be the first Xfinity driver with consecutive wins in 2023, especially facing this grid.

More Cup, Xfinity drivers next in odds

Sheldon Creed (+1000) has the next-best DoorDash 250 odds for victory. The Xfinity driver’s seventh in the championship but has yet to win a race in 2023. His best results so far are second in Talladega and third in Phoenix.

He took the pole and led the most laps last week in Portland. He’d have been fighting for victory if it weren’t for late contact with Parker Kligerman. He’s shown pace already on the road this NASCAR season and may be in the mix again.

Cup Series racer Daniel Suárez is next at +1400. The 2016 Xfinity Series champion has one win in seven years of Cup Series racing: Sonoma in 2022. Outside of that win, he’s raced well on road courses recently. He finished fifth last year at Road America and fifth at Watkins Glen. He’s got a shot for victory in an Xfinity grid this weekend.

Allgaier (+1600) could fight for a win again. He’s the best driver in the Xfinity Series over the last month, with podiums in the previous four NASCAR races. Second place in Portland and fifth in Austin are good results on road courses. A win would be challenging given the Cup Series competition but still possible.

Long shots worth considering among DoorDash 250 odds

Fellow Cup Series regular Ross Chastain (+2000) has a penchant for good road course performances. He won the Cup Series race in Austin last season and took fourth this year.

He also finished fourth in Road America. Granted, he did follow those with poor finishes in Indianapolis (27th) and Watkins Glen (21st). He’s been solid in Sonoma (seventh in 2022 and 2021). At these odds, he’d be worth a high reward.

So is Josh Berry (+5000). The JR Motorsports driver has yet to win in 2023 but has strong performances on road courses this year. Eighth in Austin and fourth in Portland show he has a shot at the win on Saturday.

Picks for the inaugural DoorDash 250

Another week, another road course race. The Xfinity Series regulars will be battling some stiff competition from the Cup Series. Of the favorites for the win, Larson seems like the best choice. He’s been stellar there in the Cup Series but has managed just one win. He can take a victory in the Xfinity race for some momentum going forward.

For longer odds, look to Suárez or Chastain. Both have a solid track record at road courses, specifically Sonoma in Cup Series races. Though a victory won’t affect the NASCAR playoff standings for either driver, it could give them confidence heading through the final stretch of the Cup Series regular season.
