Top Rookies to Watch

Leading the pack is Zaccharie Risacher, the Atlanta Hawks‘ number one overall pick. This 6’9″ wing has the potential to become an All-Star with his well-rounded skillset.  Another intriguing name is Alex Sarr, drafted by the Washington Wizards. Sarr is a versatile big man who excels on defense and has a high ceiling for development.

There is also sharpshooter Reed Sheppard, who will bring his impressive 52.1% three-point shooting to the Houston Rockets.  On the defensive end, Stephon Castle, drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, is a lockdown defender with a perfect frame for their system.  There’s also the potential for a surprise with Rob Dillingham, a raw talent drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The dominance of college players doesn’t always translate seamlessly to the NBA. Zach Edey, a back-to-back National Player of the Year, will be scrutinized to see if he can replicate his success with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Denver Nuggets found a potential steal in DaRon Holmes II, a modern big man with a well-rounded skillset that includes perimeter shooting.  Another player to watch is Kyle Filipowski, drafted by the Utah Jazz in the second round. Filipowski improved his shooting and defense in his sophomore year at Duke and could prove to be a valuable asset.

Bronny James, son of NBA legend LeBron James, will be under a microscope as he tries to silence doubters with the Los Angeles Lakers.  Undrafted sharpshooter Jack Gohlke, who impressed with his March Madness performance, will need to show the Oklahoma City Thunder that he can be more than just a three-point specialist.

The Format

The NBA Summer League in Las Vegas runs from July 12th to 22nd.  Each team will play at least five games, with the first four contests determining playoff seeding.  The top four teams based on winning percentage advance to the playoffs, with a tiebreaker system in place if necessary.

The playoffs kick off with a doubleheader on July 21st, followed by the championship game on July 22nd.  The remaining 26 teams that don’t make the playoffs will play a consolation game on July 20th or 21st.  Fans can catch all 76 games across various ESPN platforms (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN+, ESPN3) and NBA TV, with streaming available on the ESPN App.
