Listed at a whopping -20000, there is little-to-no value betting Victor Wembanyama to be taken first overall (unless you’re a whale). That’s a foregone conclusion with “Wemby” to San Antonio. The real fun is what happens after as both Scoot Henderson and Brandon Miller jockey for that second overall pick. With workouts scheduled for the next few weeks, expect their 2023 NBA draft outlooks to change.

Henderson vs Miller: Who Goes 2nd Overall?

As of June 9, the current odds favor Brandon Miller going behind Wembanyama to Charlotte at -165. Scoot Henderson is the next choice at +135, with the field a distant third, at +1600. Both are scheduled to work out for the Hornets. Henderson is scheduled for Sunday, while Miller is on Tuesday, per Roderick Boone of the Charlotte Observer.

The NBA draft outlook for both is not set in stone. Miller’s and Henderson’s odds have fluctuated. Miller got bet down to -200 just a day ago. But money quickly came in on Henderson, and the lines adjusted. It’s a tight race between the two until more news comes out of Charlotte.

Into the Hornet’s Nest: Charlotte’s Needs

The Hornets finished with a 27-55 record in 2022-23’s NBA standings. Constant injuries and a rough adjustment to the coaching change tanked Charlotte’s season. The Hornets could use all their help, especially on offense, where they finished last in offensive rating.

Both Henderson and Miller will help Charlotte score more points. Henderson can solidify the point guard spot as an explosive player in a healthy Derrick Rose mold. LaMelo Ball, Charlotte’s main star, can move to shoot guard as the two forms an exciting backcourt.

As for Miller, he is a 6’9” swingman in the mold of Paul George. He can be a star on offense as well. But as far as defense goes, he’s got more potential than Henderson. Hornets coach Steve Clifford is an old-school type who values size and defense. Miller may be a better choice if Clifford has any say about it.

Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman reported that “there are execs in Charlotte’s front office who see a star wing in Miller” while also stating “it’s not as clear how high the Hornets are on Henderson” and that “some scouts around the league have cooled on Henderson throughout the year.”

Charlotte will also host the Thompson twins, Amen and Ausar, and Cam Whitmore. However, they remain distant runner-ups to Henderson or Miller based on the consensus 2023 NBA draft outlook.

The Elite Twins: Amen vs Ausar

Two other names to be called early in the NBA Draft belong to the Overtime Elite’s star twins: Amen and Ausar. The two have made basketball news with their spectacular play in the pro league. Currently, the odds favor Amen (-400) to be taken before Ausar (+300). Amen is also the favorite to be selected fourth overall (-125) by the Houston Rockets.

However, Ausar can close the gap with his brother. He’s not expected to be a top 5 pick (+225), unlike his twin (-2000). His average draft position is set to go over 5.5, and folks have bet online. Most mocks have him being picked in the 6-8 range.

Both twins are tremendous athletes with an excellent frame to play either guard or swingman in the NBA. Amen’s stock is higher because he plays the point and is considered a better athlete. He’s more of a “boom or bust” type of prospect. Ausar, on the other hand, plays off the ball and is seen as a more formidable defender.

If the twins had better shooting, they may have challenged Henderson or Miller for a higher spot in the draft rankings. But if they can develop that in the NBA, it’s not crazy to think that the twins could be All-Stars and help their teams beat NBA spreads.
