The NBA Always Surprises Every Offseason

The NBA continues to entertain even when there is no actual basketball being played. Thanks to the 2023 NBA offseason, the league continues to offer sizzling news and tidbits. Whether it’s big trades, record-breaking signings, or superstars demanding trades, there is something here for any type of fan. With the first month of NBA Free Agency set to end, here are the biggest news from July.

Biggest News of the 2023 NBA Offseason

Washington Headlines 2023 Offseason Trade News

The 2023 NBA offseason kicked off with Washington dealing not one but two blockbuster deals. The Wizards traded superstar Bradley Beal to Phoenix then followed it up by sending Kristaps Porzingis to Boston. These moves sent shockwaves across the league and joggled the NBA stats and odds.

Beal, who twice averaged 30 points per game in a season, makes Phoenix one of the favorites to win the NBA title. He’ll join Kevin Durant and Devin Booker to form a new “Big Three” as Chris Paul goes back to Washington as part of the deal.

Of course, Washington wanted no part of Paul and quickly sent him to Golden State for disgruntled guard Jordan Poole. Paul then joins a Warriors team that won its fourth NBA title in seven years just two seasons ago. Golden State remains a top-five team when it comes to NBA predictions to win the title.

As for Porzingis and the Celtics, they are now the favorites to win the East. Boston had to part ways with former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart as part of the three-team deal. Smart goes to Memphis and will be a veteran leader to a young contender.

Rockets and Celtics Splurge With Eye-Popping Deals

While Washington was busy dealing, Houston was throwing money at every notable free agent. The Rockets ended up acquiring star point guard Fred VanVleet and edgy swingman Dillon Brooks. Along with center Jock Landale, the team spent over $240 million on three players alone.

But that $240 million is a rookie deal compared to what Boston just gave Jaylen Brown. The franchise signed its star forward to a super-max deal of $304 million. The term is for five years and will pay Brown an average annual salary of $60.8 million. In comparison, Steph Curry is making $51.5 million this coming season.

Trade Demands: It’s About Dame Time to Trade Lillard?

As a plot twist to this 2023 NBA offseason, the once-loyal Damian Lillard has publicly asked to be traded from the Portland Trail Blazers. And that’s not all. The seven-time All-Star wants to be dealt to Miami and only Miami. However, the Blazers’ brass appears to be in no rush to give in to his demands.

Lillard’s news is surprising to some. But James Harden asking to be traded from Philadelphia was predictable. The former MVP now wants to be on a fourth team in three years. He already forced his way out of Houston and Brooklyn. But his trade value may not be that great considering he’s frequently been on the NBA injury report and is turning 34 in August.
