Tough Night for Caitlin

The Indiana Fever’s struggles continued on Monday night as they fell 89-72 to the Connecticut Sun. This marked the 11th consecutive series win for the Sun, further highlighting the Fever’s woes (3-10 record).

Indiana’s leading scorer, Caitlin Clark, had a frustrating night. Limited to just 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting (all of which were in the first half) her impact was minimal.

A fourth foul in the third quarter ended her night prematurely, leaving the Fever offense shorthanded. The away crowd even chanted for Caitlin Clark WNBA to return to the game.

The turning point in the game arrived just before halftime. With Clark stripped near midcourt, DiJonai Carrington raced down the court for a buzzer-beating layup, extending the Sun’s lead to a commanding 55-35.

This capped off a dominant 16-4 run for Connecticut heading into the break. Their momentum continued in the third with a 14-6 surge, effectively shutting the door on any potential Fever comeback.

Despite a solid effort from Aliyah Boston, who recorded a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds), the Fever simply couldn’t overcome the well-rounded attack of the Sun.

DeWanna Bonner (17 points) and Carrington (season-high 22 points) led the way for Connecticut, while Alyssa Thomas narrowly missed another triple-double.

Embarrassing Loss

The Atlanta Dream are coming off their own embarrassing loss, where they fell 68-87 to the (at the time) winless Washington Mystics. Despite a valiant effort from Rhyne Howard, who became the youngest player ever to reach 200 career 3-pointers (16 points), the Dream couldn’t overcome Washington’s sharpshooting.

The Mystics came out strong, searching hard for their first win, and the Dream were never really able to keep up. While the Dream managed to close the gap slightly in the second quarter, a dominant third period from Washington sealed the deal.

Sykes, Karlie Samuelson, and Stefanie Dolson combined for three quick threes to open the quarter, extending the Mystics’ lead and putting the game out of reach.

Although Allisha Gray, Atlanta’s leading scorer, was held to a quiet night (9 points), contributions from Howard (16 points), Aerial Powers (13 points), and Tina Charles (12 points, 9 rebounds) weren’t enough to overcome the onslaught from Washington.

Atlanta Favored on the Road

  • Atlanta is a -3.5 favorite on the road, and -150 to win the game straight up. The Fever are +130 to accomplish the upset. The total for the game is set at 162.5.
  • Over the last ten games, the Fever are 3-7 straight up, 4-6 against the spread, and 2-2 against the spread at home. The Dream are 5-5 straight up, 4-6 against the spread, and 3-1 on the road.

The Dream has been better than the Fever all season, but their recent loss gives us reason for pause. Take the Fever +3.5 at home. They have played decently as of late, and although they routinely get blown out by the WNBA’s best teams, the Dream is far from that.
