Winless But Improving

WNBA rookie Caitlin Clark faced a tough start to her career with the Indiana Fever. Despite being the #1 draft pick, she has battled some of the league’s toughest defenses with the Fever’s opening schedule.

In Monday’s game against the Connecticut Sun, Clark went down with an ankle injury in the first half.

Despite the injury, Clark returned in the second half and ended the game with 17 points. Kelsey Mitchell also chipped in 17 points, tying Clark for the team high.

Clark hit some key shots and helped control the offense. However, the Fever ultimately fell short due to missed opportunities and a lack of established identity and roster continuity.

Clark’s toughness was evident as she played through the pain and her competitive spirit showed with a late technical foul. The Fever have some areas to improve, like turnovers and fouls, but Clark’s performance offered a glimpse of her potential.

Each game has seemed like an improvement for the Fever, and Monday’s loss to a solid Sun team has some Fever fans a bit more optimistic. Besides Clark and Mitchell’s 17-point contributions, the Fever had three other players score in double digits.

Seattle’s Slow Start

Although the Storm put together a new look team for the 2024 season, with hopes of contending for a WNBA championship, they haven’t started as strong as expected.

The Seattle Storm may be missing one of the best WNBA players on Wednesday. Nneka Ogwumike missed Monday’s game against the New York Liberty with an ankle injury, and the Storm fell 74-63 to the Liberty.

The Storm were unable to weather a 20-point game from Sabrina Ionescu and a 16-point, 11-rebound performance from Breanna Stewart. Jewell Loyd led the Storm with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Seattle was held to only 63 points, and although their defense played well holding a powerful New York offense to only 74 points, they couldn’t muster enough offensive punch to keep up. Skylar Diggins-Smith, a player the Storm will need to come up big to win on Wednesday, only had eight points in the Storm’s last game.

Indiana Fever vs Seattle Strom Matchup History

Fever vs Storm betting WNBA odds are Fever +5 on the road in Seattle. Moneyline is Fever +170 and Storm -205.

The game point total is set at 167.5. This season the Storm are 1-3 straight up, 2-2 against the spread, and 1-3 for point totals. The Fever are 0-4 straight up, 2-2 against the spread, and 2-2 for point totals.

These teams faced each other three times last season, the first game went to the Fever, 80-68, Indiana covering the +3 spread and the total of 164.5 going under. The second matchup had the Storm win in a blowout, 85-62, Seattle covering the +4 spread and the game going under the 162.5 point total.

Their final matchup was the only close game of the three, the Fever winning 90-86 (a push for the spread) and the game going over the 160-point total.

Although each of their games last season would have gone under the 167.5 total set for Wednesday’s game, these teams look very different than they did last season. We still like the possibility of an under in Wednesday’s game.
