Dallas Mavericks vs New Orleans Pelicans Odds: Southwest Division Matchup

Luka Doncic and Zion Williamson Meet for Third Time

The Dallas Mavericks travel to New Orleans on Tuesday night for a Southwest Division matchup against the Pelicans. Though it’s early in the season, with a 2-1 record, New Orleans sits tied for the lead in the division with the Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs. The Mavericks are 1-1 on the season with a win over the Grizzlies and a loss against the Phoenix Suns in their season opener. The Pelicans won and covered the spread in their first two games of the season, beating the Brooklyn Nets and Charlotte Hornets on the road before losing to the Utah Jazz at home in overtime. Luca Doncic and Zion Williams Meet

Superstars Luka Doncic and Zion Williamson have only met on two previous occasions throughout their careers. In both cases, Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks came out on top in what were two very high-scoring affairs. Their first meeting was a 127-123 overtime winner in favor of the Mavs in which Doncic put up 30 points and Williamson added 21 of his own. Their second meeting came in 2021 with the Mavs winning 143-130. Once again, both players put together stellar offensive performances with Doncic scoring 46 points and Williamson scoring 36 points. If Tuesday night’s NBA over under picks are anything like their past two meetings, we would recommend leaning toward the over.

Unfortunately, NBA injuries have a way of putting a damper on big matchups and that could be the case in this one. Williamson took a hard fall during Sunday night’s game against the Utah Jazz that caused him to leave the game and not return. The Pelicans reported the injury as a posterior hip contusion but have yet to say if Williamson will miss any time.

Doncic, Mavs Thrive in Matchup

Last season, the Mavericks won three out of the four meetings with the Dallas Mavericks vs New Orleans Pelicans Odds in favor of Dallas. They took the first meeting 108-92, the second meeting 139-107, lost the third meeting 107-91, and finished the fourth and final meeting with a 125-118 win. To no one’s surprise, Doncic was the Mavs leading scorer in all four games, averaging 30.7 points in the series. Both teams were very evenly matched in terms of rebounding and points in the paint.

They both averaged 44 points in the paint throughout the series while the Pelicans averaged 43 rebounds and the Mavericks averaged 40.

This season, both offenses have been extremely efficient. Dallas ranks second in the league with an offensive rating of 124.1 while the Pelicans are right behind them in third with a rating of 118.3. However, on the defensive side of the ball, the Mavericks have proven themselves to be the better team. They have the third-best defensive rating in the league, giving them the best net rating in the league.

When looking at the Dallas Mavericks vs New Orleans Pelicans Odds, we would recommend taking the Mavs to win if Williamson is unable to play in Tuesday’s matchup. New Orleans’s defense is league-average and has shown it can’t contain Doncic very well. However, in order for Dallas to have success, they will need to focus on grabbing defensive rebounds because the Pelicans lead the league in offensive rebounding, something they were equally as good at last season.
