Dennis Schroder Stats and Future: Will He Return to the LA Lakers?

Schroder Makes Strong Case for Free Agency

Will Schroder Return to LA?

Dennis Schroder will head into the offseason as a Free Agent after finishing his one-year deal with the LA Lakers. Here’s a quick overview of some key Dennis Schroder Stats and how he performed in the 2022/23 season.

Schroder made his return to LA after pit stops in Boston and Houston during the 2021/22 season and played a crucial role in helping the team reach the Western Conference Finals. He was injected into the starting lineup for their final Game 4 loss against the Denver Nuggets and has positioned himself well to receive plenty of interest from championship-caliber teams in the offseason.

When news dropped that Schroder would start along with Rui Hachimura the NBA odds today steamed in favor of the Lakers.

Schroder finished the season averaging 12.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists on 41.5% shooting from the field. His role became more defined in the latter stages of the season after the team traded for D’Angelo Russell but with his contract also expiring Schroder’s value might provide a better option for LA should they opt to bring him back.

The Lakers went 29-37 NBA against the spread in Schroder’s 66 games played this season.

Advanced Stats

Schroder’s 41.5% shooting was the worst he’s shot since the 2018/19 season, which was his first year in OKC after moving on from the Atlanta Hawks. His 32.9% shooting from 3-point range was the worst he’s shot in a season since his final season with the Hawks in 2017/18.

Despite the shooting slumps he provided value as a veteran presence off the bench and his 112.0 Offensive
The rating was the best of his career as he helped provide much-needed stability for LA down the stretch.

It’s also worth noting that even with his below-average shooting splits he still recorded a .545 True Shooting percentage, which was the best he’s had since the 2019/20 season.

His 18.6% usage rate was the lowest of his career, which is to be expected when sharing the floor with the likes of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. But, the fact he remained a positive impact on the floor on low usage is a great trait that will sit well with teams looking for an experienced presence to add to their rotation in the summer.

Possible Destinations

Schroder will almost certainly land on a championship-caliber roster given what he can offer off the bench and in the locker room.

A return to LA with the Lakers seems most likely assuming management tries to keep the team together however, a move to cross-town rivals the Clippers is also within the realms of possibility given their cap space restrictions and need for playmaking off the bench.

The Western Conference champion Denver Nuggets could also be in line for his services, as would the Phoenix Suns should they part ways with Chris Paul in the summer.

While Dennis Schroder stats might not jump off the page he showed improved metrics in key areas that will still be valuable for many teams in the league.
