Mystics vs Sun Betting Trends

The Washington Mystics are 4-3-1 against the spread, including 3-1-1 away from home. As for the Over/Under, Washington is 4-4.

The Connecticut Sun, meanwhile, are just 3-5 ATS, including 2-3 at home. Like Washington, Connecticut is 4-4 against the Over/Under.

Remember these trends when assessing the Mystics vs Sun betting odds.

Mystics Remain 0-For

What could go wrong, has gone wrong for Washington. The Mystics are 0-8, the WNBA’s only remaining winless team. They’ve been outscored by an average of 9.4 points. This is the second-widest disparity in the league behind the 2-9 Fever (-13.1).

What’s worse is, that things aren’t expected to improve anytime soon. Without Elena Delle Donne, who’s taking an indefinite leave from basketball, the Mystics lack a proven star. The two-time MVP and seven-time All-Star has played only 51 games in the past three seasons because of recurring back issues. Delle Donne also sat out the 2020 campaign in the Florida bubble because of COVID-19 concerns. Delle Donne, who turned 34 in September, has possibly played her last game for the Mystics.

Ariel Atkins, who had a team-high 15 points in Friday’s 90-79 loss to New York, has been Washington’s top scorer in five of its eight games. The veteran guard is averaging 13.8 points on 37.1% shooting per WNBA scores. Center Shakira Austin (11.7 PPG) is the only other Mystic averaging double figures in points.

As a team, the Mystics rank last in the league in scoring (74.0 PPG) and second-to-last in shooting efficiency (40.4%). The reality is that there’s no clear solution to these woes, at least so long as Delle Donne remains absent. She played 23 games last season, averaging 16.7 points and 5.4 rebounds.

Projected for 11.5 wins, second-fewest in the league ahead of Los Angeles (9.5), the Mystics could struggle to match even the lowest expectations.

Striving for Perfection

Connecticut is off to a franchise-record 8-0 start, the WNBA’s only remaining unbeaten. The Sun lead the league in scoring defense (70.6 points per game allowed) and scoring differential, having beaten opponents by an average of 10.1 points.

While the two-time defending champion Mystics (+100) and Liberty (+175) remain prohibitive title favorites, Connecticut is playing into the conversation. The Sun, who have reached the WNBA semifinals in each of the last five seasons, are now +1000 to win it all. Only two other WNBA teams have better than 20/1 odds: Seattle (+1600) and Minnesota (+1800).

Projected for 24.5 wins, Connecticut has one of the league’s best trios in Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, and Brionna Jones. They have combined to average 45.9 points, 56.8% of the Sun’s scoring.

Jones, the 2022 WNBA Sixth Player of the Year and a two-time All-Star remains on a minutes restriction after tearing her Achilles tendon last June. She played 27 minutes in Sunday’s 69-50 win over Atlanta (nine points, five rebounds, four assists) and is averaging 13.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.9 steals.

The Sun should only continue to improve as Jones takes on a larger role. In minutes played, Thomas (34.3) and Bonner (33.0) are already among the league leaders. Entering WNBA games today, the Sun have four players averaging at least 30 minutes.

Handicapping the Game

This is the second of four meetings this season. Connecticut won 84-77 in the most recent matchup on May 17. Bonner scored a game-high 22 points. DiJonai Carrington added 21 points and Thomas contributed 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

Washington has been profitable for bettors, going 4-3-1 ATS. It is also 6-1-1 ATS in its last eight road games dating to last season. Connecticut, meanwhile, is only 2-5 ATS over its last seven games.

Despite that, it’s hard to put much trust in Washington. The Sun seem only to be getting stronger, with its last three wins coming by an average of 14.6 points.

Keep that in mind when analyzing the Mystics vs Sun betting odds.
