Miami Heating Up?
Last season, Miami used a play-in tournament victory as a springboard to an unlikely NBA Finals appearance. Will history repeat itself?
Once again, the Heat backed into the Eastern Conference playoffs, scraping together 46 wins to return to the play-in. They finished with the eighth-best record in the conference, a game behind Philadelphia.
There is a lot of skepticism about Miami’s ability to run it back, even in the top-heavy East. The Heat are +1400 to return to the Finals and +4000 to win the title, one of 11 teams with 40/1 championship odds or longer.
Whether the Heat can cash in on those odds will largely depend on Jimmy Butler. He earned the nickname “Playoff Jimmy” for his ability to perform in the clutch and remains the focal point for Miami.
He averaged 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in 60 games this NBA season, despite missing time in January with a toe injury.
Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro are one of the NBA’s steadiest “Big Threes”, and there is enough talent around them to make Miami a dangerous out. Jaime Jaquez Jr. showed promise as a rookie, chipping in 11.9 points on 48.9% shooting off the bench.
The Heat remain one of the league’s stingiest defensive teams, holding opponents to an average of 108.4 points on 46.7% shooting. It’s no wonder they went under the total in 57.3% of their games, the highest rate in the NBA. Keep that in mind when analyzing the Heat vs 76ers odds.
Embiid Holds Keys for Philly
Philadelphia struggled to find its consistency for much of this season. But things might be starting to come together. The 76ers closed the regular season with eight straight wins to finish 47-35, good for seventh in the East. Although they did not finish in the top six in the East, the 76ers remain a legitimate contender.
At +800, the 76ers have the third-best odds behind Boston and Milwaukee to win the East. They are also +2000 to win the NBA Finals as one of eight teams with 20/1 championship odds or longer.
Joel Embiid remains the biggest key to Philadelphia’s fortunes. NBA injuries limited the reigning NBA MVP to just 39 games, but Embiid appears to be healthy again. Embiid is averaging 30.4 points and 9.2 rebounds across 30.6 minutes per game, putting him on par with his season averages.
The 76ers are 31-8 with Embiid on the floor this season. They need him at his best to make a deep postseason run. Without him, their record is just 16-27.
Philadelphia has been among the most profitable NBA teams for bettors, going 48-34 ATS for a cover rate of 58.5%. Only Orlando (51-31, 62.2%) has seen more success from a betting standpoint. Furthermore, the 76ers are 24-16-1 ATS at home.
Handicapping the Game
Recent NBA results are quite encouraging for Philadelphia. The 76ers have covered seven straight home games and are 10-0 ATS since March 27.
Embiid has looked healthy, scoring at least 24 points in all five NBA games he’s played this month. However, the 76ers created some concern when they downgraded Embiid to out for Sunday’s regular-season finale against Brooklyn.
The 76ers still managed to win, rolling to a 107-86 victory behind 26 points from Tyrese Maxey. But his health is worth monitoring.
Miami is dealing with injury issues on its end, as both Duncan Robinson (back) and Terry Rozier (neck) sat out Sunday’s 118-103 victory over Toronto.
The teams split four meetings this season, with Philadelphia winning the last two: 98-91 on March 18 and 109-105 on April 4.
