NBA Trade Deadline Mayhem: Durant, Irving Trades Change Title Landscape

Suns Now Favorites in the West

Things Get Crazy in Crowded Western Conference

The NBA underwent a huge transformation over the past 48 hours as a number of high-profile trades changed the landscape of the betting market. Let’s recap the NBA Trade Deadline Mayhem to see how things stand moving forward.

The Phoenix Suns trade for Kevin Durant in what was undoubtedly the biggest move across the NBA. The Suns are now +190 favorites to win the Western Conference, while sitting at +400 to win the NBA Championship – second only to the Boston Celtics.

The Brooklyn Nets didn’t leave empty handed though and while their championship window is officially closed for now they acquired a nice return to set them up for a rebuild. Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson are headed to Brooklyn while the Nets will also receive four future first-round picks from the Suns as part of the deal.

The Nets had earlier parted ways with Kyrie Irving, who arrived in Dallas to pair with Luka Doncic and the Mavericks. The Mavs were +3000 to win the NBA title prior to the trade and are now sitting at +1600 in the marketplace despite trading away Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith in the deal.

Brooklyn were understandably the biggest losers on deadline day; at least in the short-term. While the team picked up some nice future assets and roster pieces the team as currently constructed won’t be a contender in the immediate future and saw their title odds drift from +1100 to +8000 across the board.

Both LA Teams Re-Shape Their Rosters

The LA Lakers were very active in re-tooling their roster after an abhorrent start to the season.

Russell Westbrook (Utah Jazz), Patrick Beverley (Orlando Magic) and Thomas Bryant (Denver Nuggets) are no longer on the roster, along with a future first-round pick. D’Angelo Russell (Minnesota Timberwolves), Jared Vanderbilt (Utah Jazz), Malik Beasley (Utah Jazz) and Mo Bamba (Orlando Magic) have been brought in to replace them as Rob Pelinka did a fine job of injecting much needed youth, shooting and versatility to what was a very rigid roster.

The Lakers are still +3300 to win the NBA Championship but are far better positioned with their current makeup than they were just 48 hours ago when the team was beaten at home by the 12th placed Oklahoma City Thunder.

The LA Clippers were also active in providing some impressive rotation pieces as they shipped out John Wall (Houston Rockets), Reggie Jackson (Charlotte Hornets), Luke Kennard (Memphis Grizzlies) and future second-round picks in place of Bones Hyland (Denver Nuggets), Eric Gordon (Houston Rockets) and Mason Plumlee (Charlotte Hornets).

The moves did help the Clippers shorten in the market. They are now +500 to win the Western Conference and +1100 to win the NBA Finals.

Best of the Rest

The Boston Celtics added depth to their already envious roster by adding Mike Muscala from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Muscala is shooting at almost 40% from 3-point range this season and had one of the best on/off ratings for the Thunder. He’ll provide backup minutes for Al Horford and Rob Williams off the bench.

The Golden State Warriors welcomed back Gary Payton II in a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. The Warriors were forced to part ways with number 2 overall pick James Wiseman to make way for Payton’s salary.

Wiseman will join the Detroit Pistons, who have already stated they plan on using him as a starter after his bit-part role with the defending champs.

The Atlanta Hawks added much-needed wing depth in the shape Saddiq Bey from the Pistons. The Hawks gave up five future second-round picks as part of a three-team trade that also saw Wiseman move to Detroit. Atlanta also added Garrison Mathews and Bruno Fernando from the Houston Rockets in exchange for Justin Holiday and Frank Kaminsky.

The Hawks are now +260 to win their division after the Miami Heat failed to get anything done before the trade deadline. Atlanta are still +2500 to win the Eastern Conference.

The New York Knicks added another defensive wing as they traded for Josh Hart. The Blazers received Cam Reddish and a future protected first-round pick in the deal.

Portland was also involved in a three-team deal that saw them acquire Matisse Thybulle from the Sixers, who got Jalen McDaniels in return from the Charlotte Hornets.

The Sixers remain +550 to win the East behind the Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks.

That’s all for the NBA Trade Deadline Mayhem. The landscape of the league is very different to what it was when the week started so make sure to check back as we keep an eye on how the market performs with the new teams, lineups, and odd on the NBA Championship.
