NBA Wednesday Matchups Recap: Mavs Win on Kyrie Debut

Good Night at the Office for Home Teams

Irving Steers Dallas to Debut Win

The Kyrie Irving era began with a bang for the Dallas Mavericks as they upset the LA Clippers 110-104 on the road. Let’s take a look at our NBA Wednesday Matchups Recap to see how things went down across the league.

Irving had 24 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists in his Mavericks debut as they downed a red-hot Clippers team in LA. The Mavs got off to a furious start with their eight three-pointers made in the opening quarter helping them to 41-25 lead.

Reggie Bullock started off a perfect 5-for-5 from deep in the opening 5:20 minutes of the game and while the Clippers did make a comeback down the stretch to get to within a point they simply couldn’t do enough to keep the Mavs shooters at bay.

The win helped the Mavs to a three-way tie for the #4 seed in the Western Conference alongside the Clippers and Phoenix Suns.

The Portland Trail Blazers picked up an important home win as they downed the Golden State Warriors 125-122 on a night where starter Josh Hart was traded away during the pre-game warm ups.

Hart was pulled from the floor and said goodbye to teammates who gathered around the bench to read news of the report. It was all business for the Blazers after that as they found their offensive groove to help them to an important win in their playoff race.

Portland closed as 2.0-point favorites and while they covered the spread on the closing number it was the Warriors who covered for early bettors that took advantage of the +3.5 point spread at open. The Warriors are now a league-worst 8-19 ATS on the closing number in road games this season.

Shorthanded Celtics, Timberwolves Secure Big Wins

The Boston Celtics sent a strong message to their rivals as they overcame the Philadelphia 76ers 106-99 despite missing four starters for the majority of the game.

Al Horford and Rob Williams were both ruled out before tip-off as they joined Marcus Smart on the sidelines for this one. Jaylen Brown was then sent to the locker room with a facial fracture from a collision with teammate Jayson Tatum before the halftime break.

Despite all their missing pieces the Celtics never trailed in the second half as they covered the 2.5-point closing number as well as the 4.5 point opening spread. Despite receiving plenty of pre-game push on the Over this one fell comfortably Under the 227.5 point total.

The Minnesota Timberwolves pulled off an equally impressive win as they downed the Utah Jazz 143-118 on a night where they too traded away a starter just before tip-off.

D’Angelo Russell was named a starter before being pulled after news came out he was being moved to the LA Lakers as part of a three-team trade. The Timberwolves were also without Rudy Gobert and Kyle Anderson as they played their second of a back-to-back after being humiliated in Denver.

Despite the tough circumstances the team put forth their best effort of the season in a game where they went from 3.5-point underdogs to 9.0-point underdogs by tip-off. Minnesota shot a season-high 23-for-43 (53.5%) from 3-point range in this one as they single-handedly made sure this one went Over the 231.5 point total.

Best of the Rest

The Cleveland Cavaliers secured a 113-85 win over the Detroit Pistons despite being without Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell.

The shorthanded Cavs closed as 8.5-point favorites but made light-work of a young Pistons team that simply couldn’t score against one of the best defenses in the NBA. Cleveland is now 20-19-1 ATS at home this season as they cement themselves as one of the best home teams in the 2023 NBA standings.

The Washington Wizards also managed a win despite missing starters as they overcame the Charlotte Hornets 118-104. Kyle Kuzma and Monte Morris were both ruled out for the Wizards, but their defense stepped up in the second half as they held the Hornets to just 43 points en route to covering the 3.5-point spread.

The Miami Heat were 116-111 home winners over the Indiana Pacers, but a late surge from the road team helped them to cover the spread as 7.0-point underdogs.

The Toronto Raptors used a late 8-2 run to cover as 11.0-point home favorites over the San Antonio Spurs. The 112-98 final score fell comfortably Under the 234.0 point total.

The Sacramento Kings were late winners in Houston as a foul with 0.1 seconds remaining handed De’Aaron Fox three free throws to steal a 130-128 win over the tanking Rockets. Fox hit all three of the shots on a night where the Rockets had been almost flawless until the final few minutes.
