Cavs Look to Stop Roaring Nets

Cleveland Ready to End Home Stand in Style

The Cleveland Cavaliers wrap up their six-game home stand with a showdown against the in-form Brooklyn Nets. Let’s dive into our Nets vs Cavaliers Betting Odds preview to see how this one figures to play out.

The Cavs were stopped by an impressive Raptors team in their last outing before the Christmas break and will be looking to respond in front of their fans. So far they’ve gone 4-1 on this home stand, going 2-3 against-the-spread (ATS).

Meanwhile, the Nets have extended their win streak to eight-games after an impressive 118-100 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. They are just 0.5 games behind the Cavs for the #3 seed in the East.

The market for this game is sitting at 2.0-points in favor of the Cavaliers while the full game total is set at 220.0 points.

Cavs Size Should Pose Problems

If there’s one glaring weakness on the Brooklyn Nets roster it’s their lack of interior size to NBA match up with some of the more imposing bigs in the league.

That could be problematic when dealing with one of the more imposing interior duos in the league in the shape of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

When Mobley & Allen are on the floor together the Cavs are giving up just 108.8 points per 100 possessions on defense. They’re also limiting opponents to just 23.2% Offensive Rebound rate on missed shots, limiting the number of second chance opportunities against them.

While most of Brooklyn’s offense comes from their ability to operate in the midrange that’s an area where Cleveland’s defense is able to excel due to the length and versatility of Mobley. Cleveland ranks 4th in opponent midrange efficiency despite having opponents shoot almost 32% of their field goal attempts from that area.

Offensively, they’ll also find success crashing the glass with their size. The Nets rank 28th in opponent offensive rebound percentage over the past month and they could struggle to contain Cleveland’s advantage inside.

No Slowing Down KD

Kevin Durant is playing at an MVP level right now and his unique skill set makes him almost impossible to contain on a nightly basis.

Despite the size advantage Cleveland has they don’t have a lockdown on-ball defender they can throw at Durant, which could make it tough to contain him off high pick-and-roll action.

Durant has scored 24 or more points in seven of his last eight games and is shooting over 56% from the field on the season. His efficiency is a large part of what has helped make this Brooklyn offense one of the best in the league, with the attention he garners creating space on the perimeter for their shooters to get wide open looks.

Losing Joe Harris for this game is crucial given what he’s been able to give them lately from beyond the arc. Harris is shooting almost 40% from deep, which is made more impressive given how slowly he started the season from beyond the arc.

Despite taking less than 35% of their field goal attempts from beyond the arc (15th in the league) they are currently 7th in 3-point percentage as a NBA team and knocking down their perimeter shots will be crucial to tackling this Cleveland defense.

A home win will cement their status as a top-3 team in the NBA standings in the East and the atmosphere on Boxing Day will certainly give an extra edge to this Cavs team.

Looking at the NBA odds for this game I think we’re getting a really good price on the Cavs here, with the -2.0 point line quite short given how they’re playing and how they match up with the Nets.
