Denver Star Rises to the Occasion in Postseason
The Nikola Jokic regular season stats are pretty impressive. You don’t get to be a three-time NBA MVP and in the discussion for the best NBA player by merely being good.
Although as good as the regular season numbers are, the Nikola Jokic playoff stats are even more impressive. Jokic has had a higher playoff scoring average each year the Nuggets have been in the postseason. It’s continuing this season.
Nowhere has Jokic’s postseason play been more evident than in the team’s current series against Minnesota. After losing the first two games to the Timberwolves, Jokic picked it up another notch and has led the Nuggets to three straight victories.
In Game 3, he was one assist shy of a triple-double, with 24 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. He had 35 points, seven assists and seven rebounds in Game 4. In Game 5, Jokic scored 40 points and 13 assists to go with seven rebounds. It’s no wonder the NBA results show the Nuggets with three straight wins and a 3-2 series lead.
The Nuggets still have to win one more game before they worry about the remaining NBA playoff brackets. It doesn’t matter if Dallas or Oklahoma City wins if you’re going home. Denver needs Jokic to continue to play at the same high level as the past few games. The Nikola Jokic playoff stats suggest that’s a good possibility.
Jokic a Better Career Playoff Scorer
For his career, Jokic is averaging 20.9 points in the regular season and 27.7 points per game in the playoffs. His regular season numbers do take a little bit of a hit due to his first couple of seasons. It took Jokic a few seasons to adjust to the NBA game, but he’s been a beast since then. It wasn’t until Jokic’s fourth season that Denver made the playoffs.
The improvement in the Nuggets NBA standings basically coincide with the improved play of Jokic. Denver has made the playoffs every season since then.
Jokic is a triple threat on the court, being able to score, rebound and pass the ball. Those same traits are evident in the Nikola Jokic playoff stats. In the postseason, Jokic is averaging 12.2 rebounds per game and 7.6 assists. Jokic’s 2-point shooting is a little better in the regular season, but his 3-point shooting is better in the playoffs.
The last four seasons have seen Jokic at his best in the playoffs. He’s averaged 29.8, 31 and 30 points per game. So far this season, he’s averaging 28.8 points per game, but there’s more basketball to be played. He could very well improve that a little bit.
The Nuggets are guaranteed a minimum of at least two more games. It’s likely to be a bit more than that, however. Jokic is also averaging 13.3 rebounds this year in the playoffs and a league-high 9.5 assists per game.
His numbers have been so good in the playoffs recently that his stats are just comparable to what he’s done the previous three seasons. They don’t stand out when measured against the others, which says a lot about Jokic.
