Timberwolves vs Nuggets Betting Trends
The Minnesota Timberwolves are 46-42-1 against the spread, including 6-1 over their last seven games. Minnesota has also been profitable for Over/Under bettors, going 45-43-1.
In fact, the Timberwolves have gone Over the total in 10 of their last 15 games.
Conversely, the Denver Nuggets are just 41-47-2 ATS, including 1-4 in their last five games. As for the Over/Under, Denver is 37-53. Nobody has gone Under the total at a higher rate than the Nuggets (58.9%). Next closest is New Orleans at 57.5%.
That’s important to remember when assessing the Nuggets vs Timberwolves betting odds.
Denver Returns the Favor
The Nuggets flipped the switch in Game 3, responding to a pair of lopsided losses with a blowout of their own. Jamal Murray helped set the tone for the defending NBA champions, scoring 18 of his 24 points in the first half to trim the series deficit to 2-1.
Nikola Jokic, meanwhile, added 24 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists, narrowly missing his third triple-double of the playoffs.
Denver hit 14 3-pointers and shot 53.8% from the floor, operating with far more efficiency after its Game 2 malaise.
Despite trailing in the series, Denver is still viewed rather favorably by oddsmakers. The Nuggets’ NBA championship odds are now +700, third shortest on the board behind Boston (-110) and Minnesota (+400).
While the Nuggets got off to an uncharacteristically poor start this series, momentum often shifts on a dime in the playoffs. Denver knows that as well as anyone.
The Nuggets shored up some defensive issues in Game 3, holding Anthony Edwards to 19 points on 8 of 15 shooting. Edwards averaged 31 points in the first round against Phoenix and had 70 combined points in Games 1 and 2 versus Denver.
Despite that, the Nuggets went Over the total for just the second time in eight NBA games this postseason.
TWolves Still West Favorites
Minnesota’s top-ranked defense scuffled in Game 3, allowing its most points this NBA season. Instead of sending Denver to the brink of elimination, the Timberwolves now have a slim 2-1 lead.
Can they respond? There’s a lot working in the Timberwolves’ favor, but they’d be wise not to squander another opportunity at home. The Timberwolves are 2-1 at the Target Center this postseason and 32-12 overall.
Just four of those losses have been by double digits.
NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert was back for Minnesota after missing Game 2 for the birth of his son, but he was largely a non-factor.
Gobert matched a season-low with four rebounds in 27 minutes. Furthermore, the Timberwolves were outscored by 10 points with him on the floor. Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns were both minus-32.
Minnesota will try to avoid losing back-to-back games for just the fifth time this season. The last time that happened was March 8-10 against the Cavaliers and Lakers. Be sure to keep that in mind when assessing the Nuggets vs Timberwolves betting odds.
Even after Game 3, oddsmakers remain bullish on Minnesota. The Timberwolves are +140 favorites to win the West, as well as +400 to win the NBA title. Only the Celtics are bigger championship favorites.
Handicapping the Game
Few NBA playoff games today will match the defensive intensity of Denver-Minnesota. This has been a highly physical yet entertaining series, one that was seemingly trending in the Timberwolves’ favor before the Nuggets’ impressive response in Game 3.
Minnesota is capable of responding, but only if Edwards recaptures his form from Games 1 and 2. Without him, the Timberwolves may not have enough juice offensively to keep pace with the defending champions.
Given how this series started, Minnesota can ill afford to head back to Denver tied 2-2. That, however, may be tough to avoid.
