Wings Could Struggle To Score Without Sabally

Sky vs Wings Betting Odds: Key Injuries Set Both Back

The Chicago Sky and Dallas Wings will open up their seasons head-to-head in one of two games on Wednesday. The Sky are excited about their future after drafting Kamilla Cardoso with the third overall pick and Angel Reese with the 7th overall selection. While Cardoso is out with a shoulder injury and won’t play, Reese will be available.

The LSU star added 13 points on 6-for-10 from the field in the final preseason game in Chicago’s rout of the New York Liberty. Granted, the Liberty sat their starters for half of the game, but Reese certainly looked like she belonged.

Despite Reese’s potential, the Sky are still +10 against the Wings in the first WNBA matchup. Meanwhile, the total sits at 160.5 for the first matchup on Wednesday’s WNBA slate.

We’ll break down the Sky vs Wings betting odds and provide our WNBA betting strategies for this WNBA matchup below.

Sky vs Wings Betting Odds Preview

The Sky took a hit offensively last season. Chicago finished sixth in points per game and allowed 83.4 points per game to opponents the previous year. In addition, the Sky scored -1.6 net points a game and finished 12th in free throw percentage, hitting only 75.2% of foul shots. The Sky went from shooting 54.2% from inside the arc in 2022 to hitting only 47.4% from two in 2023.

This was one of the main reasons the Sky selected two bigs with their first two picks in the WNBA Draft.

On the other hand, Dallas added Jacy Shelton with their sixth overall selection. She’s a former Ohio State guard who is super balanced in all areas. Shelton can drain threes but also added nearly four assists per game in her final three seasons at Ohio State.

It’s unlikely Sheldon will start for the Wings. But she’ll get legitimate minutes off the bench. Dallas is still led by Arike Ogunbowlae, who averaged 21.2 points per game last season. She’s heading into her sixth season with the Wings and has averaged 20.2 points in 152 games with Dallas this season.

Kamilla Cardoso Out At Least One Month

The Chicago Sky made a splash by drafting South Carolina product Kamilla Cardoso with the third overall selection in the WNBA Draft. However, in Chicago’s loss to the Minnesota Lynx in their first preseason game, some WNBA news released that Cardoso injured her shoulder and will now have to wait to make her WNBA regular season debut.

It’s expected she’ll miss at least one month before making her WNBA debut.

This will sting for the time being, especially since the Sky could also be without Brynna Maxwell, Taya Reimer, and Isabelle Harrison for the first regular-season game of the year.

Stephanie Soares Is Getting Her Chance

The Dallas Wings have announced that Stephanie Soares has made the roster. She was the fourth overall pick of the 2023 draft but sat out the entire season last year with her second ACL knee injury. Soares’ career has been a nightmare. She played just 13 games for Iowa State before missing the rest of the 2022-2023 season after tearing her ACL the first time.

Soares has so much potential. If she stays healthy, many WNBA predictions believe she’ll be an x-factor for the Wings this year.

More Injuries, Less Points

The Wings won’t have power forward Satou Sabeast until August. Last year, she scored 18.6 points per game, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists. She’ll be missed, as she’s nursing a shoulder injury. On the other hand, the Sky will also be shorthanded with Cardoso out. Isabelle Harrison is listed as a game-time decision.

While we spoke about what Cardoso is capable of, Harrison added 8.7 points per game last year after starting half of Dallas’ games. She’s not a three-point shooter but has hit 49% from the field since entering the league with Phoenix in 2016.

Meanwhile, the Sky were horrible on the defensive glass last season. That shouldn’t be as big of an issue this season. For example, against the Liberty, the Sky added 41 rebounds and out-rebounded New York by nine. While New York sat its starters for half the game, seeing the Sky succeed on the glass was good. Even against the Minnesota Lynx, despite an 11-point loss, the Sky added four more rebounds in that game.

On the other hand, Dallas has always been known for its defense. Last season, the Wings held teams to just 24.1 rebounds per game and added 14.4% of turnovers per game. They kept fouls down to 18.1% and led the league in opponent steal rate.

Opponents still shot the ball effectively against the Wings last year, but Chicago likely won’t make the jump from 11th in two-point field goals to the top four this season, especially with the Sky’s top prospect out for a month.

That said, the under 160.5 (-110) is the most appealing play when looking at the Sky vs Wings betting odds.

After reviewing all of the WNBA matchups coming up, most WNBA scores look like they’ll go under the total. The Sky-Wings matchup will likely be one of them.
