WNBA Betting Preview: Mercury vs Wings Odds

Do-or-Die Time For the Phoenix Mercury

Heading into Friday night’s slate of WNBA games, there are four teams tied in the standings and fighting for a playoff position. One of those teams is the Phoenix Mercury who needs a win to keep their season alive. They have a tall task ahead of them because they will be without their two best players as they take on a Dallas Wings team that has already clinched a spot in the postseason. Let’s take a look at Mercury vs Wings Odds.

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

The Mercury announced that both Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith will miss the rest of the regular season. Taurasi is sidelined with an injury while Diggins-Smith is out for personal reasons. The Mercury vs Wings odds for this matchup is set at Wings -1.5. We like the Wings to cover this number for a variety of reasons.

 Game Information

  • Game: Dallas Wings (17-17) at Phoenix Mercury (14-20)
  • Location: Footprint Center
  • Day/Time:

For starters, it’s no surprise that not having both Taurasi and Diggins-Smith on the floor is a massive blow for Phoenix. That leaves the majority of the scoring responsibilities to Sophie Cunningham, Shey Peddy, and Diamond DeShields.

In the previous two games without Taurasi and Diggins-Smith, the trio combined for 52 of the team’s 77 points against the Liberty and 63 of their 76 points against the Lynx. If the Wings can shut one of those players down, it’s going to be very difficult for Phoenix to generate enough offense to win.

The Wings recently clinched a spot in the playoffs with a win over the Liberty earlier in the week.  It’s fair to wonder if the fact that Dallas is safely in the postseason means that they relax a bit in this game and don’t take the Mercury all that seriously.

Dallas is coming off of a beatdown by the Liberty and will want to regain momentum with wins heading into the playoffs. This is also a Wings team that is fairly young and doesn’t have a ton of experience in WNBA games in the playoffs, meaning they can’t coast over these next two games and rely on experience to turn things up a notch once their first series starts.

There is a chance that Dallas decides to rest players tonight, giving the Mercury an advantage when it comes to the WNBA odds; even if that is the case, this Phoenix team has been through so much this season with Brittney Griner’s situation, Tina Charles leaving, and now Taurasi and Diggins-Smith out – we think time is just about up for the orange and purple. We think the Mercury vs Wings odds are priced just right. Take Dallas giving the points.
