That’s important to remember when analyzing the Dream vs Mystics betting odds.

Livin’ Out a Dream

Are the Dream contenders or pretenders? It may still be too early to tell.

Atlanta is 2-2 after Sunday’s 92-79 loss to Minnesota. It will have a chance to improve on that against the winless Mystics before a three-game stretch against Las Vegas, Connecticut and New York, who are a combined 13-3.

Projected for 18.5 wins, Atlanta is seen as middle-of-the-pack. However, if it can survive this upcoming gauntlet, opinions may change.

The Dream have a bona fide No. 1 scorer in Rhyne Howard. The former No. 1 overall pick is averaging a team-best 21 points on 45.9% shooting. Thanks to Allisha Gray and Tina Charles, an eight-time All-Star who sat out all last season, the Dream have a formidable Big Three.

As such, the Dream rank second in shooting percentage (44.7) and fourth in scoring (84.8 points per game). At the same time, they’re allowing an average of 84.8 points.

While Atlanta is seen as a safe bet for the playoffs, with -250 odds to qualify, there remains skepticism about its ceiling. The Dream are +5000 to win the WNBA title, the fifth-longest odds on the board.

Nowhere but Up

A tough start keeps getting worse Washington. The Mystics are 0-6, the league’s only remaining winless team.

The Mystics are coming off their largest loss, a 101-69 defeat at Seattle on Sunday. Per WNBA scores, their six losses have come by an average of 9.7 points.

Making matters worse, the Mystics’ future is dim. With two-time MVP Elena Delle Donne taking an indefinite break from basketball, there’s not much to look forward to. Delle Donne has appeared in only 51 games over the last three seasons because of recurring back issues.

She also sat out the 2020 season in the Bradenton, Fla., bubble due to COVID-19 concerns. Delle Donne, who turned 34 in September, has possibly played her last game for the Mystics.

Ariel Atkins has taken over as Washington’s top scorer in Delle Donne’s absence. The two-time All-Star is averaging 12.3 points, though she was limited to two points on 0-for-12 shooting in Sunday’s loss. Joining her in double figures are Shakira Austin (11.5), who is probable with a hip injury, and Karlie Samuelson (11.0).

As a team, the Mystics are last in scoring (74.3 points per game) and second-to-last in shooting percentage (40.2). They also have the league’s worst rebounding rate (30.3 per game).

Washington was projected for only 11.5 wins, second-fewest in the league ahead of Los Angeles (9.5). But if the first few weeks are any indication, reaching that total will be mighty difficult. The Mystics are already just +350 to make the WNBA playoff bracket.

Handicapping the Game

For Washington, it seems like things may get worse before they get better. Outside of Aaliyah Edwards, the No. 6 pick in April’s draft, the Mystics lack any real building blocks. That, of course, is as much a problem now as it is in the future.

The Mystics are the WNBA’s only winless team, ranking last in scoring and eighth in opponent’s scoring.

Atlanta has issues of its own to sort out. But for now, the Dream seem like an obvious favorite in the Dream vs Mystics betting odds, even on the road.
