2023 NIT Betting: Tournament Down to Final 8 Teams

Oklahoma State Favored to Win it All

The 2023 NIT betting odds schedule this week has four pretty decent games, two on Tuesday and two on Wednesday. The two remaining No. 1 seeds, Oklahoma State and Oregon, are in action Tuesday. The college basketball odds have the Cowboys +400 to win the NIT. Oregon is tied with Vanderbilt for second choice at +450. Utah Valley has the highest odds of the remaining teams at +1200.

UNT North Texas at Oklahoma State OKST

Date & Time:
Location: Gallagher-Iba Arena (Stillwater, Oklahoma)
Streaming: ESPN

North Texas at Oklahoma State kicks-off the NIT version of the Elite Eight with a game featuring two defensive standouts. North Texas ranks No. 26 in adjusted defensive efficiency. The Cowboys are No. 12. Both teams hold the opposition’s shooting percentage down.

North Texas can make too many fouls on occasions but it hasn’t really hurt them yet. The Mean Green will come out and try to slow the game down. Despite low scoring totals, Oklahoma State plays at a pace that is close to the NCAA average.

North Texas is a better shooting team than Oklahoma State, especially in 3-point shooting. The Mean Green are No. 57 in the nation while Oklahoma State is No. 316. North Texas scores 35.4% of its points on the 3-pointer. The Cowboys score 30.4% of their points from 3-point range; that’s the sign of a team taking too many outside shots.

The college basketball odds have Oklahoma State -5 with a total of 124.5. The Cowboys are -210 on the moneyline. The biggest edge the Cowboys have is strength of NCAAB schedule. They’re certainly more battle tested than North Texas. Points should be hard to come by in this one. The total is low but the under is probably the way to go here.

WIS Wisconsin Badgers at Oregon Ducks ORE

Date & Time:
Location: Matthew Knight Arena (Eugene, Oregon)
Streaming: ESPN

The 2023 NIT betting odds handle on this game should be pretty high. It features two well-known teams from big conferences and is a solid matchup. Oregon is favored by 4 with a total of 134.5. The Oregon Ducks are -190 on the moneyline.

The Wisconsin Badgers are going to play their slow, deliberate style, while the Ducks are a little slower-paced than an average team. There shouldn’t be as many possessions in this game. The Badgers are a better defensive team. The Ducks get a big edge on offense, ranking No. 34 to Wisconsin’s No. 131.

The Ducks happen to be a good 2-point shooting team and the Badgers aren’t as good stopping the inside shot. Oregon should have some success taking the ball to the basket.

Both teams are a little below average at the free throw line, which could come into play in a tight game. Another game with a bit of a low total, but the under is probably the correct side.

UAB UAB Blazers at Vanderbilt Commodores VAN

Date & Time:
Location: Memorial Gym (Nashville, Tennessee)
Streaming: ESPN2

UAB visits the Commodore to start Wednesday and they are favored by 2 with a total of 153. The college basketball odds have Vanderbilt -135 on the moneyline. Vanderbilt is ranked No. 26 in adjusted offensive efficiency in the Pomeroy rankings, which is too high.

The Commodores aren’t a great shooting team. They don’t turn the ball over much and get some offensive rebounds. But they’re not great in either aspect. The Vanderbilt defense is a bit above average. The Commodores defend the 3-pointer well but that happens to be the strength of the Blazers.

Despite being a solid 3-point shooting team, UAB scores just 27.1% of its points from 3-point range. The Blazers take a lot more shots from the inside. Part of that is due to the team’s tempo, where UAB ranks No. 37. The Blazers want to run and hope you play along with them. Vanderbilt played a tougher schedule, so this line seems a bit on the low side. But the best play on your 2023 NIT betting odds for this game is to take the game over the total.

CINCincinnati Bearcats at Utah Valley Wolverines UVU

Date & Time:
Location: UCCU Center (Orem, Utah)
Streaming: ESPN2

Utah Valley makes a rare television appearance, when the Wolverines host Cincinnati in the last quarterfinal game of the week. This one is even with a total of 151. The Cincinnati Bearcats are a bigger name and play in a better conference. But Utah Valley is a pretty solid team and should give the Bearcats all they can handle.

Cincinnati comes into the game at No. 46 in the Pomeroy rankings for offensive efficiency. The Wolverines are No. 33 on defense. The Bearcats are above average shooting the ball and don’t commit a lot of turnovers. But that No. 46 ranking might be a little bit high.

Utah Valley shoots the ball about as well as the Bearcats but are ranked No. 112 due to turnovers. Fortunately for the Wolverines, the Bearcats don’t force a lot of turnovers. It’s probably not a stretch to say this is one of the biggest home games for Utah Valley in recent years.

So expect a full house with plenty of energy for the Wolverines. Cincinnati may be slightly better, but playing at home and most likely wanting the game more are two big factors. Take Utah Valley to get the win and advance to the semifinals.
