Big 12 Basketball Matchups: Texas Visits Kansas in Key Game

TCU Travels to Kansas State in Battle of Top 15 Teams

The Big 12 basketball matchups have some great games this week, beginning with Monday’s Texas at Kansas contest. TCU is at Kansas State on Tuesday night in another big matchup. In the remaining eight games for the week, seven of them have at least one ranked team, which is a testament to the strength of the conference. Several of those ranked teams are going to be underdogs this week, as there are no easy games in the Big 12.

Monday, Feb. 6

Texas Longhorns vs Kansas Jayhawks

Date & Time:
Location: Allen Fieldhouse (Lawrence, Kansas)
Streaming: ESPN

The Big 12 basketball matchups open the week with No. 10 Texas (19-4) visiting No. 8 Kansas (18-5) in a key conference clash. The college basketball point spreads have Kansas as a 3.5-point favorite and a total of 146.5. On the surface this one is evenly matched.

Texas is No. 13 in adjusted offensive efficiency, while Kansas is No. 16 on defense. Kansas is No. 27 on defense and Texas is No. 27 on defense. Texas is a better 2-point shooting team and the Jayhawks are better from 3-point range. Both teams are in the top 50 in NCAA basketball in pace, so there could be a lot of up-and-down the court here. With the total at 146.5, this one could be worth a play on the over.

Tuesday, Feb. 7

TCU Horned Frogs vs Kansas State Wildcats

Date & Time:
Location: Bramlage Coliseum (Manhattan, Kansas)
Streaming: ESPNU

The next game in the Big 12 basketball matchups features No. 15 TCU (17-6) visiting No. 7 Kansas State (18-5). The Wildcats will be about 3-point favorites with a total near 148. Both teams are a little better defensively than they are on offense but also like to play at a quick pace, which makes the total play a little tricky. Kansas State does have problems with turnovers, ranking No. 251 in protecting the ball, while TCU is No. 19 in turnovers forced. The Horned Frogs are terrible from 3-point range, which is the strength of the Kansas State defense. Despite the projected up-tempo game, the NCAAB games predictions would lean to the under in this one.

Wednesday, Feb. 8

Iowa State Cyclones vs West Virginia Mountaineers

Date & Time:
Location: WVU Coliseum (Morgantown, West Virginia)
Streaming: ESPN2

The Big 12 basketball matchups kick-off Wednesday’s tripleheader with a decent game between No. 13 Iowa State (16-6) visiting West Virginia (14-9). Even though the Cyclones have the better record and are ranked, expect the Mountaineers to be favored by about 3 points with a total near 136.5. Both teams can force turnovers, with Iowa State No. 1 in the country and West Virginia No. 46, and both are in the top 30 in offensive rebounds. Iowa State’s foul shooting is always a concern in close games. The Cyclones are No. 330 in the nation, shooting just 66% from the charity stripe.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs Oklahoma State Cowboys

Date & Time:
Location: Gallagher Iba Arena (Stillwater, Oklahoma)
Streaming: Big 12 Network

Texas Tech (12-11) visits Oklahoma State (14-9) and the Cowboys will be favored about 8.5 points with a total of 134.5. The Red Raiders are a better shooting team than Oklahoma State but the Cowboys get a huge edge on defense. Oklahoma State ranks No. 7 in adjusted defensive efficiency and is in the top 20 in both 2-point and 3-point defense. Texas Tech shoots the 2-pointer well but will be tested by the Cowboy defense. This could be a decent spot for the Red Raiders, however, catching the Cowboys after knocking off TCU and traveling to Iowa State next.

Oklahoma Sooners vs Baylor Bears

Date & Time:
Location: Ferrell Center (Waco, Texas)
Streaming: ESPNU

The final game in the Big 12 basketball matchups features Oklahoma (12-11) visiting No. 11 Baylor (17-6) and the Bears will be close to 9-point favorites with a total near 143. The Sooners aren’t a bad team but they can’t match Baylor’s offense, which should be the difference in this one. The Bears are No. 3 in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency. Baylor gets plenty of offensive rebounds, which helps its rating, as the Bears aren’t a great shooting team. The Sooners are solid defending the 3-pointer, where Baylor scores 35% of its points, so may be able to hang around a bit in this one.

Saturday, Feb. 11

Kansas Jayhawks vs Oklahoma Sooners

Date & Time:
Location: Lloyd Noble Center (Norman, Oklahoma)
Streaming: CBS

The Jayhawks visit the Oklahoma Sooners and the line will likely be a bit lower than many expect, as the Jayhawks will be close to 2.5-point favorites with a total near 140. Kansas beat Oklahoma 79-75 earlier in the season. The Sooners are having a tough time in conference play but have dropped three Big 12 games by three points or less. If Oklahoma can take care of the ball, they’ll make a game of this one. The Sooners will try to slow the game down a bit and the under is worth a look if the total is 139 or higher.

Baylor Bears vs TCU Horned Frogs

Date & Time:
Location: Schollmaier Arena (Fort Worth, Texas)
Streaming: ESPN2

Another solid offering by the Big 12 Conference here, as two ranked teams battle it out in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs went into Baylor and came away with an 88-87 victory, rallying back from a 48-31 first-half deficit. The Horned Frogs will be about 3-point favorites in this one and the total will be close to 150. The Bears are likely going to try and slow the pace down a little. Baylor has a big edge in offensive rebounding. The Bears made 16 turnovers compared to 7 by TCU in the first meeting, wasting a +7 in rebounding in the process.

Kansas State Wildcats vs Texas Tech Red Raiders

Date & Time:
Location: United Supermarkets Arena (Lubbock, Texas)
Streaming: Big 12 Network

The Big 12 basketball matchups for the week conclude with a decent game between Kansas State and Texas Tech. The Wildcats will about 2-point favorites with a total near 144. The Wildcats won 68-58 earlier in the season in a game the Red Raiders couldn’t hit their shots.

Texas Tech was 38.1% from 2-point range and 24.1% from 3-point range. Texas Tech even stunk it up from the foul line, going 5 for 12. The Red Raiders led 33-28 at halftime but the Wildcats stormed back for the win. Kansas State was 20 for 27 at the foul line, so a decent disparity in free throw attempts. If the total is no higher than 145, the over is worth a good look here.
