Big East Betting Roundup: Xavier at Connecticut Highlights Week

Creighton Hosts Musketeers on Saturday

The Big East betting roundup offers up some pretty solid games beginning Wednesday and continuing through Sunday. Xavier and Connecticut highlights the week, but Xavier at Creighton should also be a pretty one, as will Providence and Villanova. A good schedule for fans and bettors alike.

Wednesday, Jan. 25

XAV Xavier Musketeers vs Connecticut Huskies CONN

Date & Time:
Location: XL Center (Hartford, Connecticut)
Streaming: Fox Sports 1

The Big East betting roundup begins with a pair of ranked teams in Xavier (16-4) visiting Connecticut (16-5). Despite the similar records, the Huskies are favored by 7.5 points with a total of 151. Both teams have been among the better college basketball teams against the spread. Xavier is 11-7-2 ATS, while Connecticut has gone 13-8 against the number. Xavier gets a slight edge on offense, while the Huskies are a much better defensive team. The Huskies rank No. 12 in adjusted defensive efficiency. Xavier is No. 97. The Musketeers’ 3-point defense leaves a lot to be desired, so expect Connecticut to put up plenty of long-range shots. The Huskies score 34.4% of their points from 3-point range and Xavier is allowing 36.2%, which is No. 292 in the nation. If Connecticut hits from the outside, Xavier will have a tough time keeping pace.

SJU St. John’s Red Storm vs Creighton Blue Jays CREI

Date & Time:
Location: CHI Health Center Omaha (Omaha, Nebraska)
Streaming: CBS Sports Network

St. John’s (13-7) visits Creighton (11-8) in the last Big East game of the evening, and the Blue Jays are favored by 9 with a total of 151. The spread seems a bit high, but Creighton is a bit better than its 11-8 record. The Blue Jays are No. 29 in adjusted offensive efficiency and No. 22 in defense. The Blue Jays get a matchup edge, as Creighton’s weak link on defense is the 3-pointer, but St. John’s is pretty bad from long range. Creighton is solid with its inside defense. It wouldn’t be a shock to see Creighton win by double digits.

Saturday, Jan. 28

XAV Xavier Musketeers vs Creighton Blue Jays CREI

Date & Time:
Location: CHI Health Center Omaha (Omaha, Nebraska)
Streaming: CBS

The Musketeers have their second straight tough game, this time visiting Creighton and the Blue Jays will be close to 4-point favorites. The total will be right about 156, as both teams can score and Xavier’s defense isn’t nearly as good as the offense. Xavier should be able to score from the outside, as Creighton’s 3-point defense doesn’t instill a lot of confidence. As long as the total doesn’t exceed 157.5, one of your ncaab betting predictions should be on the over in this one.

Marquette Warriors vs DePaul Blue Demons

Date & Time:
Location: Amica Mutual Pavilion (Providence, R.I.)
Streaming: Fox Sports 1

The Marquette Warriors visit the DePaul Blue Demons for a Saturday afternoon game where the Warriors will be close to a 10-point favorite with a total close to 155. Marquette leads the nation in 2-point field goal percentage and the Blue Demons are pretty average defending against it. The Warriors are decent defensively but do allow some points from 3-point range, which is where DePaul scores 35.9% of its points. The Blue Demons have a shooter’s chance at covering a fairly large number as a home underdog.

Sunday, Jan. 29

PROV Providence Friars vs Villanova Wildcats VILL

Date & Time:
Location: Wells Fargo Center (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
Streaming: Fox Sports 1

The Big East betting roundup begins the day with an early affair in Philadelphia, as Providence visits Villanova. The game will be close to even with a total near 140. The Friars are ranked and Villanova isn’t, but this is a tough game for Providence. Villanova’s defense isn’t that good but it does hold its own on the defensive glass, where Providence gets a big edge against most teams. The Wildcats shoot a lot of 3-pointers, although they aren’t the greatest from long range and can score from the inside. If Villanova gets a few of the calls that tend to go the home team’s way at times, it leads the nation in free throw percentage. This is a good spot for Villanova to get the win.

GTWN Georgetown Hoyas vs St. John’s Red Storm SJU

Date & Time:
Location: Madison Square Garden (New York, N.Y.)
Streaming: Fox Sports 1

The final game for this week’s Big East betting roundup is one that used to be among the best in the country, but has fallen on hard times with Georgetown losing all prominence. St. John’s will be favored by about 15 points with a total near 155. The Hoyas aren’t a very good basketball team and the once-proud defense now ranks No. 279 in the nation. Georgetown is an average offensive team, which doesn’t cut it when you allow that many points. St. John’s is a solid team, particularly on defense. Still, it’s a lot of points to lay in this spot. St. John’s is coming off a game with Creighton and has a decent Seton Hall squad waiting in the wings.
