Caleb Love Stats: Former North Carolina Guard’s Busy Offseason Finds Him Heading West

Arizona Adds Key Transfer as Former North Carolina Guard Caleb Love to Become a Wildcat

Transcript Issues Led Love’s Plans to Join Michigan Ajar

The last time the Arizona Wildcats took to the court, the newly crowned Pac-12 tournament champions were expected to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament. That ended with a stunning loss to Ivy League champion Princeton due to some horrible 3-point shooting. Looking at the Caleb Love stats, perhaps the latest addition to the Arizona roster could help in that area.

Love, who helped North Carolina reach the 2022 national title game, originally announced his intention to transfer to Michigan. However, ESPN’s Jeff Borzello reported that issues with some of Love’s credits transferring from North Carolina to Michigan resulted in Love’s decision to decommit from Michigan.

Now he is headed to Arizona for his fourth season and maybe even his fifth season of eligibility.

What Does Love Bring?

Love has been an inconsistent shooter during his three years at North Carolina. When looking at Caleb Love’s stats, he shot a career-low 29.9% on 3-pointers as North Carolina went from playing for a national title to failing to make it into the NCAA tournament field.

Love went 6-for-9 from distance against Clemson and that was one of six games when he made at least 50% of his 3-point attempts during the 2022-23 season.

Love scored 1,476 points in 101 career games with the Tar Heels. He averaged 14.6 points and 3.3 assists at North Carolina and had more assists than turnovers in each of his three seasons. Love averaged 18.8 points with 19 3-pointers in six games during the 2022 NCAA tournament. That included a 30-point effort against UCLA out of the Pac-12 in the regional semifinals.

“Caleb is a tremendously talented guard who has significant experience playing college basketball at a high level,” Arizona men’s basketball coach Tommy Lloyd said in a release announcing Love’s transfer to Arizona. “We look forward to helping Caleb grow his game at Arizona. And as we near the completion of the roster for the upcoming season, we feel great about how everything has come together. Now it’s time for the real work to start.”

The 6-foot-4 St. Louis native has two years of eligibility remaining thanks to the additional year added to players in school during the global pandemic. ACC fans could get a chance to see him as Arizona is scheduled to play at Duke early in the non-conference portion of the 2023-24 schedule.

Wildcats Get a Boost

Arizona lost a key player when guard Kerr Kriisa decided to transfer to West Virginia leaving the Wildcats without the player who led the team in assists a season ago.

Top scorer and rebounder Azuolas Tubelis is off to the NBA while third-leading scorer Courtney Ramey is also gone.

Oumar Ballo is the top returning player for the Wildcats after putting up 14.2 points and 8.6 rebounds a season ago. Pelle Larsson, who averaged 9.9 points and was one of three Arizona players with at least 100 assists, is another returnee to keep an eye on.

Jaden Bradley, who averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 assists as a freshman at Alabama, is also transferring to Arizona.

Bradley and Love were part of one of the most memorable games and unforgettable college basketball scores of the 2022-23 college basketball season. Love finished with a season-high 34 points, nine rebounds, and four assists as North Carolina, then ranked first in the national polls, lost 103-101 in four overtimes to Alabama in the Phil Knight Invitational. When looking at the Caleb Love stats, it was one of the 11 games with at least 20 points that Love had during his junior campaign.

Bradley had 10 points, three rebounds and two assists in the victory. Six of his double-digit scoring games at Alabama came against ranked teams. Former San Diego State forward Keshad Johnson is also joining the Wildcats.

The transfers could play a key role since eight Pac-12 teams have incoming freshmen recruiting classes rated higher than Arizona’s.

Arizona (+2600) is 13th in the odds to win the national title during the 2023-24 season with the Wildcats (+600) tied for ninth in the college basketball odds to reach the Final Four.
