Colonial Athletic Conference Odds: Hofstra, Charleston Top Dogs

Regular Season Conference Title Decided Saturday

The Colonial Athletic Association isn’t having its best year. Both Ken Pomeroy and the Sagarin college basketball rankings have the conference towards the bottom in overall strength. Charleston and Hofstra are the only two teams to tank in the top 100, with nine teams ranking No. 200 or lower.

Charleston and Hofstra are the Colonial Athletic Conference odds on favorites to win the regular season conference title. Hofstra is 15-2 in CAA play with one game remaining. Charleston is 14-2 with a pair of games on the schedule. Both teams will be double-digit favorites in their remaining games, so most likely will end up tied at 16-2. Not surprisingly, the two also happen to be among the best in college basketball against the spread. Hofstra is 19-10 ATS this season. Charleston is 17-10-1.

UNC-Wilmington already has 21 victories and Towson has 19 with a pair of tough games remaining. But the Tigers do have a chance to get that 20th win and a likely invite to one of the postseason tournaments.

TOWS Towson Tigers vs Charleston Cougars COFC

Date & Time:
Location: TD Arena (Charleston, South Carolina)
Streaming: CBS Sports Network

Towson (19-10) visits Charleston (26-3) in a game the Cougars need to remain tied for first place in the CAA heading into the final day of the season. The Colonial Athletic Conference odds will have the Cougars about a 10-point favorite with a total near 148. Charleston needed overtime to defeat Towson the first time the teams played on New Year’s Eve in an ugly game.

Charleston made 24 turnovers, while Towson made 19. The Cougars led by 10 at the half but let Towson back in the game in the second half. Charleston is a better 2-point shooting team but takes nearly as many 3-point attempts as it does 2-pointers. The Cougars are clearly the better team but the spread is a bit high and Towson can hit the 3-pointer.

STON Stony Brook Seawolves vs NC-Wilmington Seahawks UNCW

Date & Time: Location: Trask Coliseum (Wilmington, North Carolina)

Stony Brook (10-19) travels to face Wilmington and the Seahawks are going to be favored by about 14 points with a total near 126. Neither team is that great offensively, but Wilmington can play a bit of defense, something Stony Brook can’t say. The teams played to a 62-51 final score earlier this season. Wilmington led 22-21 at the half before scoring picked up a bit in the second half. Both teams like to play at a slow pace, which doesn’t help scoring much. But with nothing to play for, the teams could run a little bit more than normal.

STON Stony Brook Seawolves vs Charleston Cougars COFC

Date & Time:
Location: TD Arena (Charleston, South Carolina)
Streaming: CBS Sports Network

This one should be ugly, as Charleston is going to be favored by close to 20 points and a total of 141. This is the first meeting of the year between the two and as long as Charleston takes care of business on Thursday, it’s hard to see the Cougars holding back here. The Cougars will be close to a 13.5-point favorite for the first half and even that may not be enough. The Cougars like to force a fast pace and should get Stony Brook out of its comfort zone early on.

NE Northeastern Huskies vs Hofstra Pride HOF

Date & Time:
Location: Mack Sports Complex (Hempstead, New York)

The Colonial Athletic Association odds are going to have Hofstra about a 15-point favorite with a total of 142 in a game the Pride need to at least clinch a share of the regular season title. Hofstra is playing well, having won 10 in a row. The Pride defeated Northeastern 72-53 on the road earlier this month and there is no reason they won’t turn up the heat in this one. Hofstra should know the results of the Charleston game before it hits the court. The Pride are a good-shooting team that doesn’t make a lot of mistakes with the ball. Hofstra’s defense is solid and should be able to keep the Huskies in check.

TOWS Towson Tigers vs NC-Wilmington Seahawks UNCW

Date & Time:
Location: Trask Coliseum (Wilmington, North Carolina)

This one isn’t for the conference title, but it’s actually the best game of the day in the CAA. The Colonial Athletic Association odds will have Wilmington as about 2.5-point favorites with a total near 132. This matchup pits both team’s strong points, as Towson is better offensively and Wilmington is better on defense. The teams haven’t met this season, so there is no revenge angle.

This one could be for third-place in the conference standings, so a little bit of incentive for both teams. Both teams slow down the pace, so even if they’re hitting some shots it could be a low-scoring game. The under may be the way to go in this one.
