Miami Laboring Offensively in ACC
The Hurricanes put up some impressive offensive numbers in the preseason. But it’s been a lot tougher to get the offense on track in ACC play. Miami is No. 10 in KenPom’s offensive efficiency ratings for ACC games. The Hurricanes aren’t shooting particularly well and are making too many turnovers.
Miami hasn’t gotten to the foul line much in ACC action, scoring 15.5% of its points from the charity stripe. Miami has the third-shortest possession time in conference games, which has helped its point production.
The Hurricanes are averaging 78.7 points per game, but just 71.8 in ACC play. The team’s second-leading scorer, Nijel Pack, missed the last game and is questionable here.
The defense hasn’t played all that bad in the conference. Miami is allowing 72 points per game in ACC action. The Hurricanes are defending the 3-pointer well and don’t send the opposition to the foul line often. Miami is pretty average in forcing turnovers and allowing offensive rebounds.
The Hurricanes see more 3-pointers than any team in the conference. A little more than 45% of the shots against Miami are from 3-point range.
The Hurricanes began the season with some weaker college basketball teams. But they’ve come down to earth a bit in conference games. Miami is 13-11 against the NCAAB betting odds for the season and 6-7 in ACC games.
The Hurricanes are just 3-5 ATS as an underdog this season, but have gone 21-9 the past three years. Miami is 11-13 in totals on the season, but just 4-9 in ACC games.
Clemson With Some Tough Losses
The Tigers are 16-7 on the season, but could easily have another win or two. Clemson’s last two losses have been by a point each game. Before that is was a three-point loss in double-overtime. Clemson also lost to Memphis by two.
The Tigers are still 13-10 against the spread on the season and 14-9 in totals. Clemson has gone 6-6 ATS in ACC games. But the Tigers are just 1-4 ATS this NCAAB season avenging a road loss and 6-12 ATS over the last three years. So it’s not definitely not an ideal spot for Clemson.
Clemson is No. 3 in the KenPom offensive efficiency ratings for ACC games. The Tigers are averaging 75.7 points per game in ACC action. Clemson is No. 11 in average time per possession in conference games, so the Tigers make the most of their opportunities.
The Tigers don’t shoot the 3-pointer well at all. But Clemson is No. 3 in the ACC in 2-point field goal percentage. The Tigers are also solid from the foul line and do a good job on the offensive glass.
The Clemson defense struggles a bit defending the 3-pointer where it allows 36.3% shooting. The Tigers are decent defending the paint and preventing offensive rebounds. Clemson doesn’t force a lot of turnovers and sends teams to the foul line a little too much.
What to Expect
The main thing to expect here is for the Tigers to put more emphasis on defense. Miami scored 60 points in the second half of the first meeting between the two. Clemson led 43-35 early in the second half, but were outscored 60-39 the remainder of the NCAAB game. The Hurricanes shot 53% from the field and were 11 of 24 from 3-point range.
Miami likes to play at a little quicker pace than the Tigers, but Clemson should look to slow it down a bit after the first meeting.
Who to Bet On?
The Miami vs Clemson odds of Clemson -7.5 is a tough number to bet. The Tigers are playing well right now, but are just 7-10 against the spread as a favorite. There’s also the dismal record in revenge spots for the Tigers to consider. Miami is coming off a tough loss to North Carolina and might show some of the effects here.
The Miami vs Clemson odds on the total might be a shade low. The total was 155 when the teams met last month and the game easily went over the number. But this is a game where it’s easy to see Clemson looking to play better defense and keep the pace down. The under 151 looks to be the best play in this contest.
