NCAAB Teams Odds: A Look at the “Favored to Compete” for the 2023 Title

Gonzaga and North Carolina Early 2022-23 Championship Front-Runners

Defending National Champion Kansas will Look Much Different in the 2022-23 season

When looking at the teams with the best NCAAB teams odds to win the college basketball championship, there are some familiar names. Gonzaga and North Carolina, who benefitted from some of the star players opting to return to college, are currently viewed as the teams to beat during the upcoming season.

Duke, defending champion Kansas, and Kentucky are among the other top contenders in what should be a wide-open race to the title.

Here’s a look at the best NCAAB teams at the current time.

Gonzaga Bulldogs (+850 to win the national championship)

Drew Timme, Julian Strawther, and Rasir Bolton all return in hopes to get Gonzaga over the hump and win the title. Chet Holmgren left after one season as expected, but the addition of transfers Efton Reid and Malachi Smith will give Gonzaga more experienced players to build around.

Gonzaga has been among the teams with the best odds to win the national championship in recent years. Is this the year when it all comes together for the Bulldogs?

North Carolina Tar Heels (+850 to win the national championship)

With the return of Caleb Love, R.J. Davis, Armando Bacot, and Leaky Black all returning combined with freshmen Jalen Washington and Seth Trimble joining the Tar Heels, it is not surprising that North Carolina is viewed as one of the leading contenders for the 2023 title after falling just short in 2022.

The Tar Heels covered in 10 of the last 11 games they played during the 2021-22 campaign. Will the Tar Heels continue that trend and be favorites of those looking at the 2023 NCAAB odds?

Houston Cougars (+1000 to win the national championship)

Marcus Sasser was limited to just 12 games a season ago. He is returning and is hoping to lead the Cougars on a deep run through the NCAAB tournament. Tramon Mark appeared in only seven games. The prospects of those two getting to play together for a full season, great things could be coming for Houston during the 2022-23 season.

Jarace Walker could be among the top freshmen in the country.

The Cougars covered 10 of the last 12 games a season ago and will look to continue that trend with so many familiar faces returning.

Kansas Jayhawks (+1200 to win the national championship)

Kansas may be the defending national champions, but other than Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris, most of the players responsible for that title run have moved on.

Ochai Agbaji, Christian Braun, David McCormack, and Remy Martin won’t be coming back.

Kevin McCullar a transfer from Texas Tech will provide scoring on the wing. Ten players on the Kansas team will be either freshmen or sophomores, so this could be a work in progress. The message is clear when looking at the current NCAAB team odds, Kansas is a contender until it proves otherwise.

Kentucky Wildcats (+1200 to win the national championship)

Double-double machine Oscar Tshiebwe is back after averaging 17.4 points and 15.1 rebounds, guard Sahvir Wheeler, and forward Jacob Toppin also return. As is customary with Kentucky, there are plenty of new faces. Cason Wallace and Chris Livingston are the latest five-star recruits to sign up to play for John Calipari.

Add in Iowa transfer CJ Fredrick and Illinois State transfer Antonio Reeves and there are the pieces necessary for Kentucky to compete for the SEC and national titles.

Arkansas Razorbacks (+1400 to win the national championship)

In-state product Nick Smith will add some star power for the Razorbacks. Anthony  Black is another newcomer who could take the SEC by storm.

The addition of transfers Ricky Council from Wichita State, Trevon Brazile from Missouri, Jalen Graham from Arizona State as well as brothers Makhi and Makhel Mitchell will help ease the loss following the departure of the top four scorers. Davonte Davis is the top returning player for the Razorbacks.

Arkansas was just 3-5-1 against the spread in its last nine games last season.

UCLA Bruins (+1400 to win the national championship)

Jaime Jaquez and Tyger Campbell join Jaylen Clark and David Singleton as the top returning players for the Bruins. Leading scorer Johnny Juzang is among the departures. Freshmen Amari Bailey, Adem Bona, and Dylan Andrews could make immediate impacts.

Duke Blue Devils (+1400 to win the national championship)

After one year at Duke, Paolo Banchero became the first pick in the NBA Draft. Teammates Mark Williams, AJ Griffin, and Wendell Moore were also first-round selections. Before feeling sorry for the Blue Devils following the departures and retirement of Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, the Blue Devils signed three of the top four players in the current incoming recruiting class. Dereck Lively, Dariq Whitehead, and Kyle Filipowski are three reasons the Blue Devils will be in the national title picture once again.
