Zach Edey’s Remarkable Career Is Still Going

These Zach Edey Stats Are Mind-Boggling

When Zach Edey arrived at Purdue as a freshman, he started just two games and played only 14.7 minutes a night. He averaged 8.7 points in those 14.7 points. But while there was clearly something there, Edey still had a lot of work to do to become a high-level player in the Big Ten.

Edey, a 7-4 center, had the body and build to compete in the conference. However, he lacked the footwork or soft touch that would make him elite.

Edey scored 22.3 points per game by his junior season and added 12.9 rebounds in a tremendous breakout season. Edey’s footwork, basketball IQ, and free-throw shooting improved.

That’s when his game was ultimately noticed.

After losing to Fairleigh Dickinson in the NCAA Tournament in junior season, Edey elected to return to Purdue for his final season. This year, he was the NCAA’s best college basketball player, averaging over 24 points per game with 12.1 rebounds. He shot over 62% from the field and still took 13.3 shots per game this season.

Edey has accomplished so much in his four seasons at Purdue. However, he hasn’t helped Purdue win an NCAA National Championship.

Purdue is currently in the Sweet 16 and has a real path to make it all the way. It would be an incredible way to finish off Edey’s career.

An Afterthought At First

Many schools were interested in Zach Edey out of high school. He got offers from Purdue, Baylor, and Santa Clara, among others. When he chose Purdue, Edey was an afterthought. Teams just wanted him for his height, and if he had decent offensive qualities, that would be a plus.

Edey wasn’t even considered for the NBA. People acknowledged that he’d play overseas when his career finished. But now he’s an NBA prospect and could get drafted in the upcoming draft in the later portion of the draft.

Edey’s work ethic has shined from season to season, and now he’s legitimately a target on some draft boards.

His Final Season

Despite having a COVID year next season, Zach Edey will become a professional basketball player after this season. He announced this earlier in the season. Therefore, Purdue was able to hang his number in the rafters of its home arena to showcase their gratitude for Edey’s loyalty and play throughout his time with the Boilermakers.

Zach Edey’s Award Winning Season

With those stats this season, Zach Edey became the Big Ten Player of the Year and was the consensus National Player of the Year. He did the same thing in 2023.

He also surpassed 2,000 points for his collegiate career and was the sixth player in Big Ten history to have 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career.

At Purdue, he holds the record for the most rebounds in school history. But his career isn’t over, as Purdue is in the Sweet 16.

His other highlights include winning the Big Ten Tournament MVP in 2023. Edey also won the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in his last two seasons with Purdue.

In 2023, he won many awards and could still bring in more awards before the 2024 season concludes.

Not bad for a three-star recruit, right?

Experience Playing With Canada

Before his senior season, Zach Edey was given an opportunity to play in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He became the only college player on the team. Edey and Canada qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics on September 3, winning the bronze medal over the United States in the third-place game.

Edey was on the team that won its first-ever World Cup medal and first medal at any global tournament like the Olympics since 1936.

Canada is really starting to add talent in basketball and will soon become one of the best teams in the world. It’s unclear if Edey will or expects to play for the team at the Summer Olympics. But after two back-to-back Player of the Year awards, you’d have to imagine Edey is wanted back for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Summer League and prep for the regular season could hurt Edey’s chances of playing at the Summer Olympics.

Does Edey Belong In The NBA?

While Edey is on some draft boards, he’s not a lock to make an NBA team for next season. However, if he’s not drafted, a team will sign him for the Summer League in hopes of seeing Edey play at a high level against other young stars in the NBA.

Edey doesn’t have a three-point shot and isn’t super versatile. Some scouts believe he’ll be a backup center. Others think he has no chance in the league. But this is what the scouts said about Edey before he had big seasons at Purdue.

Edey has defied the odds. He’s worked on his footwork and shot-making ability to grow his game. It’s still possible it translates into the NBA. He’s not like Tacko Fall. Edey has a lot more to him than just being tall. There’s a reason why Purdue is a No. 1 seed in the NCAAB rankings in the NCAA Tournament.

Purdue has also been profitable against the spread this season. That’s ultimately why Purdue has been a part of our college basketball expert picks throughout the season. Edey and Purdue are really good. Purdue built its team perfectly around Edey. They knew what they had when nobody else did.
