2023 Big Ten Football Championship Odds: Can Michigan Three-Peat?

Michigan & Ohio State Have Won Big Ten Championship Six Straight Seasons

The Big Ten will have a bunch of new teams in 2024. But this year, everything will remain intact. The Michigan Wolverines have won the Big Ten two straight seasons after Ohio State won the conference four consecutive years prior.

Michigan State has two Big Ten Championships in the last decade, while Penn State has one.

The Big Ten conference is divided into two divisions. The winner of the East region plays the winner of the West region for the Big Ten Championship.

Wisconsin’s the only team from the West division that has won the Big Ten Championship in the last decade. But they won their previous title in 2012. From 2013 to current, the Big Ten East has won the Championship.

Don’t expect anything to change this year.

Take a look at the betting favorites for the 2023 Big Ten Football Championship odds.

Buckeyes logo Ohio State (+170)

All along, it seemed like Kyle McCord would be QB1. However, Ohio State is now at a crossroads, per reports. McCord and Devin Brown are competing for the starter job. The competition is ongoing for now. Ryan Day has not announced who the starter will be. People close to the team suggested that McCord and Brown each had about 50% of the staff on their side.

It’s a close race. But it’s discouraging that McCord couldn’t run away with the race. McCord has been in the system for three years and is a junior. Everyone thought he’d have the job until Devin Brown looked extraordinary on the football field.

While the race continues, the rest of the offense looks sensational. Marvin Harrison Jr. and other receivers like Emeka Egnuka and Julian Flemming will return for another year. At running back, notable names like Miyan Williams and TreVeyon Henderson will share the carries.

If Brown is the quarterback for the Buckeyes, Ohio State will be tremendous.

Wolverines logo Michigan (+175)

Although the college football betting lines don’t favor Michigan to win the Big Ten Championship, the Wolverines will likely be toe-to-toe with Ohio State throughout the season.

The Wolverines have shocked Ohio State in the last two seasons and have the talent to do it one more time.

The Wolverines still have J.J. McCarthy at quarterback and possess one of the best running-back duos in the nation between Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards.

Jim Harbaugh will miss the first three games as head coach for the Wolverines, which was self-imposed by Michigan itself. But he’s not missing a single Big Ten game.

The entire projected offensive line is expected to be a bunch of seniors with a ton of experience, including two transfers, Drake Nugent and Myles Hinton.

Meanwhile, the defense is primarily in-house players other than Josh Wallace at the right cornerback spot. They’re familiar with each other and the system. That could only help.

Don’t be afraid to bet on Michigan after looking at the 2023 Big Ten Football Championship odds.

Nittany Lions logo Penn State (+550)

The Penn State Nittany Lions haven’t had much luck with their NCAA Football scores against Michigan and Ohio State.

But those NCAA football games might be a bit more intriguing this year.

The Nittany Lions will start Drew Allar at quarterback and have Nicholas Singleton at running back. Those two sophomores could be one of the best tandems in America.

Penn State also added Dante Cephas from the transfer portal. He figures to be one of Allar’s favorite targets this season, along with Harrison Wallace III and KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

On the other hand, the entire starting 11 on the defensive end are players that have returned from last year’s team. With the offense improving, the defense needs to do its job.

I’d be confident in Penn State this season and believe they’ll threaten Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten East.

What About The Big Ten West?

The Big Ten West hasn’t been as competitive as the Big Ten East. It’s been over ten years since a Big Ten from the West division actually won the conference championship.

We didn’t even have the College Football Playoffs when Wisconsin won the Big Ten last.

But if any team can do it, it’s Wisconsin.

The Badgers brought in Luke Fickell to be the head coach of the program. Fickell brought Cincinnati into the College Football Playoff a couple of years ago after going 13-0 in the regular season. Fickell’s Bearcats lost to Alabama in the Power 5. But that was the first team to make the College Football Playoff outside the Power 5 conferences.

Wisconsin’s returning eight starters from the defense. They’ve also added a transfer in Tanner Mordecai from SMU, who should be a solid quarterback in an Air Raid scheme under Phil Longo. The Badgers also went out and added a few transfers at wide receiver. That should help Mordecai do his thing.

But the most significant piece of the offense is Braelon Allen. He can do it all at the running back position, including pass-catching.

Wisconsin’s 2023 Big Ten Football Championship odds are sitting at +750. That’s the fourth-highest probability in the conference.

Meanwhile, other teams in the West, like Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska, don’t have the offense even to come close to the top three teams in the Big Ten East.

Any Sleepers?

It’s hard to become a sleeper in the Big Ten. But we saw TCU work its way to the top in the Big 12 last season after its projection was the middle of the pack.

However, the Big 12 doesn’t have any consistently good teams like Ohio State, Michigan, and even Penn State.

Maryland still has Taulia Tagovailoa and added a bunch of players from the portal. There’s potential with the Terps. However, there are still way too many question marks and potential holes on this team to actually believe they have a chance.

The Best Bet

At the time of writing this article, Ohio State hasn’t announced its quarterback. I believe in Devin Brown. However, I’ve been turned off by Kyle McCord. I don’t think McCord is good enough to carry the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Championship.

I still think McCord will win the job against Brown due to his age and experience in the program.

Therefore, I’d ride with Michigan to win three straight. The Wolverines continue to outclass the Buckeyes and have a veteran quarterback who helped defeat the Buckeyes in the Big Ten Championship last year.
