2024 NCAAF Cheat Sheet: LSU Tigers Stats & Odds

The 2024 LSU Tigers Stats Will Have A Hard Time Matching The 2023 Offensive Numbers

Nussmeier Finally Gets To Take Over As the LSU Starting Quarterback

LSU was certainly fun to watch during the 2023 season as the Tigers led all Football Bowl Subdivision teams in total offense and scoring offense.

With Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels and his star receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas in the NFL, it remains to be seen what the 2024 LSU Tigers stats will look like at the season’s end.

LSU allowed 142 points in its three losses that kept the Tigers out of the SEC championship game and left LSU out of the College Football Playoff field.

The Tigers are 2-10 outright in their last 12 games against ranked teams. The Tigers led all FBS teams with 12 games, landing over the total in 2023. The Tigers covered in six of their seven home games with LSU favored in each of those games.

LSU came into the 2023 season with the fifth-shortest odds of winning the national title. Only Georgia and Alabama were ahead of the Tigers in the SEC championship odds.

LSU was picked to finish fifth in the SEC preseason poll, with the Tigers receiving two first-place votes. Offensive lineman Will Campbell was a first-team All-SEC preseason selection, with receiver Kyren Lacy, tight end Mason Taylor, and offensive lineman Emery Jones named to the second team.

Linebacker Harold Perkins, a top pro prospect, and defensive back Major Burns were the defensive players honors.

Daniels was priced at +2800 to win the Heisman Trophy in early September so he delivered for those who went with Daniels to win the Heisman.

The regular-season win total for LSU was set at 9.5, and with losses to Florida State, Ole Miss, and Alabama, the Tigers fell just short.

Some Holes That Need to Be Filled

LSU was 13th in the preseason Associated Press poll and 12th in the American Football Coaches Association poll, so there are some naysayers out there.

With Daniels opting out of the ReliaQuest Bowl, Garrett Nussmeier got the chance to show what he could do. He passed for 395 yards with three touchdowns in the 35-31 win. Will he carry that over into this season and put up impressive NCAAF stats?

Texas A&M safety Jardin Gilbert and Liberty receiver CJ Daniels lead the list of incoming transfers, while offensive tackle Lance Heard, defensive lineman Quency Wiggins, receiver Jalen Brown, and edge rusher Jaxson Howard were among the players who transferred out of the LSU program.

LSU had a top-10 recruiting class with defensive lineman Dominick McKinley, tight end Trey’Dez Green, safety Dashawn Spears, and receiver Kylan Billiot were all top-100 recruits.

Lacy could have a breakout season as the top pass catcher for LSU, while Kaleb Jackson could become the next great LSU running back. He will have plenty of opportunities, considering that Daniels led LSU in rushing yards and No. 2 rusher Logan Diggs transferred to Ole Miss. He is a player to watch in the 2024 LSU Tigers stats.

Only 10 teams from the Power-5 conferences allowed more yards per game than LSU did a season ago.

Two of the top five tacklers headed off to the NFL.

Burns and linebacker Greg Penn were the top two tacklers, while Perkins can be unblockable.

In the losses to Ole Miss and Alabama, the Tigers allowed 605 rushing yards. If that doesn’t change, the Tigers will struggle to match last year’s record.

Championship Odds: Let’s Take A Wait-And-See Approach

LSU has back-to-back recruiting classes ranked in the top 10 nationally so there is still plenty of talent. However, the CFP championship predictions don’t currently include LSU.

The season opener against Southern California should provide some answers of whether LSU is rebuilding or just reloading.

Having to replace Daniels and having a new offensive and defensive coordinator could cause some growing pains early in the season and could impact the 2024 LSU Tigers stats.

LSU might not be an underdog until the eighth game of the season, so there will be chances for the Tigers to pile up the wins early in the season.

Conference Odds: A Reasonable Schedule Could Help The Tigers Roar

LSU doesn’t have Georgia and Texas, the teams with the shortest odds to win the SEC title, on the schedule in 2024. The games against ranked Alabama, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss are all at home.

While there is no such thing as an easy path through the SEC, the conference schedule could be a heck of a lot more challenging than the one the Tigers are facing.

Having a bye week before the matchup with Ole Miss is smart scheduling, while the Tigers hope that the regular-season finale against Oklahoma could have SEC title implications.

Regular Season Wins: Non-Conference Success Will Be Crucial

When looking at the 2024 LSU Tigers stats, there are five games against teams in the top 25 in the national preseason polls, so the Tigers will need to win at least three of them to finish over nine wins during the regular season.

It won’t be easy, but there isn’t a game on the LSU schedule where the Tigers are viewed as having little chance for victory.

Personally, staying away from the RSW bet might be the smartest move since there are other betting options.

To Make Playoffs: A Spot In The CFP Is A Possibility

If the College Football Playoff field had expanded to 12 teams in 2023, LSU might have been in the running for the national title. Based on the national polls, the Tigers could be in the running to be among the college football playoff teams.

There will be chances to the Tigers to strut their stuff as four of the final seven games come against ranked teams.

Multiple SEC teams will be in the CFP field. Can LSU be one of those teams?

Side Bets

LSU is a six-point favorite in the season opener against USC, with the total at 63.5. It will be interesting to see where the money falls in this game since the two star quarterbacks from LSU and USC were the top two picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is tied for seventh at +2000 in the odds of winning the Heisman Trophy. Nussmeier is fifth at +800 in the odds to lead the SEC in passing yards.

Kyren Lacy could be worth a “what the heck” bet at +2200 to lead the SEC in receiving yards.

Nussmeier is at +2500, and Perkins is at +3000 to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
