Tigers Bidding for Return to National Supremacy
The Clemson Tigers have grown into a perennial powerhouse under head coach Dabo Swinney, with national championships in 2016 and 2018 to go with 12 consecutive double-digit win seasons. The Tigers should remain such this season, even if they’re surrounded by a bit more uncertainty. The Tigers aren’t the runaway favorite to win the ACC for a change, nor are they a sure bet to make the College Football Playoff. In fact, the Tigers haven’t been there since the COVID-interrupted 2020 campaign.
Despite that, Swinney did plenty in the offseason to bolster ninth-ranked Clemson for another run at college football supremacy. Most notably, he brought in a new play-caller in former TCU offensive coordinator Garrett Riley, who won the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant last year. Riley should do wonders for sophomore Cade Klubnik, who is taking over as the starter at quarterback following a promising cameo. The offense is very much in transition, but the Tigers do return running back Will Shipley.
The Tigers should face competition from Florida State. The Seminoles, ranked No. 8 nationally, bring back a Heisman Trophy contender at quarterback in Jordan Travis. While Clemson is a slight favorite to win another ACC crown, the gap has narrowed considerably. That should be enough to cause some drama on Saturdays this fall. Without a doubt, plenty of intrigue surrounds the Tigers.
National Championship Odds: Klubnik Must Prove Himself to Have a Shot
Clemson remains among the shortlist of NCAA title contenders at +1600, up from +1800 in the preseason. That matches USC for the sixth-shortest odds on the board, behind two-time defending national champion Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan and LSU.
The Tigers are obviously capable. They’ve done it twice in the last decade under Swinney. But it won’t be easy, especially with something of an unknown at quarterback. The Tigers’ last two national championship teams had proven, NFL-caliber starters in Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. Klubnik obviously has yet to reach that level. Until he does, it’s hard to see the Tigers winning it all despite the relatively short Clemson Tigers future odds.
Conference Odds: Florida State Nipping on Clemson’s Heels
Clemson has won seven of the last eight ACC titles, with the exception of 2021 (Pittsburgh). Swinney’s team remains the favorite, although the gap has shrunk considerably. While the Tigers’ odds have improved from +190 to +140, Florida State is right on their heels at +160. Besides them, the next-closest teams are North Carolina and Louisville at +1000.
The Tigers are obviously getting a lot of respect here from the betting public, and rightfully so. Nobody has been more dominant of late in the ACC. But they’re no lock. Far, far from it, in fact. Fortunately for Clemson, the much-anticipated NCAA football game with Florida State comes in their own backyard (more on that later).
Regular Season Wins: Home-Heavy Slate Proves Favorable
Projections have increased slightly from 9.5 to 10.0 wins, with a -120 lean to the Under. The Tigers won nine games during the 2021 regular season and 10 last year. You’d have to go back to quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s sophomore season in 2019 to find the last time they hit this Over.
That, of course, doesn’t offer much encouragement. But keep in mind, the Tigers’ NCAA football schedule is manageable. They open Labor Day as a 13.5-point and -460 moneyline favorite at Duke. Then comes back-to-back cupcakes against FCS school Charleston Southern and Florida Atlantic before a showdown Sept. 23 against Florida State. What’s important is that — much like Nov. 18 against < href=”https://www.pointspreads.com/ncaaf/teams/north-carolina-tar-heels/”>North Carolina — is at home. The Tigers will also host Notre Dame on Nov. 4. That bodes well for Clemson.
To Make Playoffs: Reasonable Path, But Little Margin for Error
Clemson has now missed the CFP two years in a row after six consecutive trips. At +300 to return, it’s facing its longest Clemson Tigers future odds since 2017 (+550). That said, the path back is reasonable assuming the Tigers can take care of both Florida State and North Carolina and win the ACC. Anything short of that won’t cut it.
