Dillon Gabriel Stats: Oklahoma Star Climbing Heisman Odds Board

Red River Rivalry Comeback Latest Highlight for Sooners QB

Dillon Gabriel stole the show in the Red River Rivalry, leading Oklahoma to a 34-30 upset of No. 3 Texas last Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Gabriel completed 23 of 38 passes for 285 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 113 yards and a score.

Gabriel’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Nic Anderson with 15 seconds remaining capped a thrilling five-play, 75-yard drive. It also helped keep the Sooners (6-0) among the ranks of the unbeaten in college football.

To break down Gabriel’s impressive start to the season, we crunched some of the numbers that matter most. Here’s a closer look at Dillon Gabriel stats.

Fueling Oklahoma’s Perfect Start

Dillon Gabriel’s stats are among the best in FBS. Through six games, Gabriel is completing 72.3% of his passes for 1,878 yards 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions. The fifth-year senior has also rushed for five scores, one shy of his career high. He’s ninth in the country in passing yards per game (313) and 13th in completion rate.

Oklahoma has been the biggest beneficiary of Gabriel’s strong start, climbing to No. 5 in the AP Top 25 poll. It’s the Sooners’ first top 5 ranking since 2021, when they rose to No. 2 in the country before finishing No. 16.

The Sooners will be in action again on Oct. 21 (noon ET, ABC) against UCF following a Week 7 bye.

Saturday was Gabriel’s first 100-yard rushing game this season and the fourth in which he ran for a touchdown. His previous career high for rushing was 70 yards, which he accomplished in a 38-35 loss to Baylor on Nov. 5, 2022.

The Sooners, a 5.5-point underdog, piled up 486 total yards and surpassed 30 points for the fourth time this season. They also moved to 6-0 against the spread, one of five undefeated FBS teams remaining for college football this weekend besides Oregon, Rutgers, Penn State and UNLV.

The win did, however, come at a cost. Junior Andrel Anthony, the Sooners’ leading receiver, will miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee. The former Michigan transfer had distinguished himself as Gabriel’s favorite target, with 27 catches for 429 yards and a score.

Only time will tell how much that may affect Gabriel in the second half of the season. Keep this in mind when analyzing college football odds and predictions.

Odds Outlook

Gabriel has been one of the biggest risers on the board for the Heisman Trophy, watching his odds climb from +2500 to +1200. The Oklahoma standout now has the fourth-best odds, trailing Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. (+200), USC’s Caleb Williams (+225) and Oregon’s Bo Nix (+600). While it may be difficult to crack the trio of Pac-12 Conference quarterbacks, Gabriel has certainly put himself in the conversation.

One of the biggest obstacles could be Oklahoma’s schedule, which features just one currently ranked team — No. 23 Kansas on Oct. 28 — over the final half-dozen games. Gabriel improved his stock with a stellar performance against Texas, but he’ll need to do more to stay in the hunt.

That said, Oklahoma remains a legitimate contender regardless of Gabriel’s candidacy. The Sooners are +110 to win the Big 12 Conference, though they’re still a smidge behind Texas (+120). They’re also +1400 to win the national championship, matching Oregon for the seventh-best price on the board. At the very least, they’re already bowl-eligible for the 25th straight season.

The Sooners went just 6-7 last season, in Brent Venables’ first season as head coach, and lost 35-32 to Florida State in the Cheez-It Bowl. Despite finishing under .500 for the first time since 1998, the final year before Bob Stoops took over, the Sooners were projected to win 9.5 NCAAF games. It’s a lofty number, yet they seem poised to cash in.

Again, much of the credit goes to Gabriel, who’s rebounded from an injury-interrupted campaign to lead Oklahoma back into the top 5. What’s their ceiling? At this point, anything’s possible.
