Change in Betting Favorite

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl between Maryland and North Carolina State is one that can go either way. That’s reflected in the Dukes Mayo Bowl betting odds. This NCAAF teams appear to be fairly evenly matched, with the Sagarin college football ratings having Maryland 1.21 points better on a neutral field. But the Wolfpack should have a crowd advantage here, with the game being played two-and-a-half hours away from its campus.

When the NC State vs Maryland betting odds first opened, the Terrapins were 1.5-point favorites. N.C. State is now favored by a point. One reason for the change in favorite could be two of Maryland’s top three wide receivers have elected to opt-out of the game. But the Wolfpack isn’t without some questions of their own.

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl betting odds saw the total score on the game open at 46. It has been bet up to 47.5 despite Maryland going 4-7-1 in totals this season. North Carolina State is 5-6-1.

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl betting odds on the moneyline opened Maryland -125. The Wolfpack are now -120.

Wolfpack Have Questions at Quarterback

The quarterback situation for North Carolina is a bit of a mess and the coaches aren’t saying much. That’s to keep Maryland guessing as much as anything but the guesswork never makes it easy for bettors. N.C. State starting quarterback Devin Leary suffered a season-ending injury in October and has also entered the transfer portal. Backup quarterback M.J. Morris missed the last two games with an injury of his own. He is practicing but coach Dave Doeren won’t comment further. Be sure to check the rest of the ncaaf injury report before betting.

Third-string quarterback Jack Chambers played some and wasn’t horrible but the team doesn’t have much faith in him. The Wolfpack used fourth-string quarterback Ben Finley in the season finale against North Carolina. Finley began the season as the scout team quarterback.

Morris played well, throwing seven touchdowns against one interception. Finley had a solid game against the Tar Heels after looking shaky in his first start. If Morris can play – which could be a big if – he should get the nod.

N.C. State doesn’t run the ball particularly well, scoring just eight touchdowns on the ground this NCAAF season. So the Wolfpack will need decent play from whichever quarterback is in the game. They don’t need great play from the QB position, as defense is the strength of the team.

The Wolfpack allowed 19.4 points per game to teams averaging 26.9 points and are equally good against the pass and run. N.C. State did allow at least 21 points in each of its last six games. The Wolfpack allowed 21 or more points just once in its first six games, although the competition was a bit softer.

Terrapins Hurting at Wide Receiver

The Terrapins are going to be missing 87 receptions for 1,080 yards and six touchdowns from their opt-outs at wide receiver. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa still has a couple of decent targets in Jeshaun Jones and tight end Corey Dyches but likes to mix the run and the pass.

The Terps run and throw roughly 35 times per game and have a big-time running back in Roman Hemby, who ran for 924 and 10 touchdowns during the season. Antwain Littleton II added six scores on the ground during the season.

Tagovailoa played well and has some added pressure with that last name. He threw for 2,787 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season.

He was intercepted six times but did take 29 sacks. If it’s a close game, Maryland does have a solid kicker in Chad Ryland, who was 16 for 20 on field goals attempts, making 13 of 14 from inside 50 yards.

Maryland allows 24.1 points but the Terps aren’t as bad as it may appear. Their foes averaged 28.7 points and the Terrapins were better than average against the run and the pass. They struggled a little bit down the stretch but having Penn State and Ohio State in back-to-back games will do that to your defensive numbers.

Game Looks to be a Toss-Up

Any time you see college bowl odds where a team is favored by less than a field goal, you know it’s expected to be a game that can go either way. The Dukes Mayo Bowl betting odds of N.C. State -1 lets you know that is the case here.

It was a little surprising to see the Duke’s Mayo Bowl betting odds climb on the total considering both teams are decent on defense and both were under teams during the season.

The Wolfpack’s question at quarterback makes it a bit difficult to back N.C. State in this spot. The team will certainly be better if Morris is behind center but that remains to be seen. Maryland will miss their wide receivers but the Terrapins still have a few quality people to catch the ball and a decent rushing attack. The Terrapins offer a bit more value than the Wolfpack and look to be the side to back.
