East Carolina Pirates 2023 Future Odds

The Pirates have produced three straight winning seasons for bettors

The East Carolina Pirates finished the 2022 season 8-5 SU and 4-4 SU in the American Athletic Conference. It was the first winning season for the Pirates since 2014, when they finished 8-5.

Head Coach Mike Houston is heading into his fifth season in Greenville along with offensive coordinator Donnie Kirkpatrick (5th season) and defensive coordinator Blake Harrell (4th season).

NCAAF standings showed East Carolina ended the 2022 season with a win in the Birmingham Bowl (53-29) against Coastal Carolina.

It was the school’s first bowl appearance since 2015 and their first win since a 37-20 Beef ‘O’ Brady Bowl win in 2013 against Ohio. Over the last three seasons, the Pirates are 19-13 ATS (+447 units) and 45-58 ATS (-1638 units) since 2014.

Pirates Focused On Building Off 2022

By comparison to what the school was, 15-10 SU over the last two seasons was a massive turnaround. Before 2021, East Carolina was 21-48 overall, 38-53-1 ATS. Bettors consistently ran away from the Pirates, who failed to be competitive most weeks.

The East Carolina future odds suggest that the program is not only light years away from competing for a college football championship, but they may fall backward inside the American Athletic Conference after losing a massive amount of offense from their 2022 team.

Gone are quarterback Holton Ahlers who threw for 3,708 yards, running back Keaton Mitchell (1452 yards), and 1,000-yard receivers Isiah Winstead and C.J. Johnson.

The team will return just four offensive starters. East Carolina’s defense will be the team’s strength, but there are still questions off that side of the ball after allowing 417 yards per game last year (ranked 103rd).

After studying our NCAAF future prediction, we find it unlikely that Houston will find the same kind of production from his current group. When putting our money behind a program, we want to make sure they are stacked.

In addition, East Carolina will be facing four new members of their conference, with Charlotte, UTSA, Florida Atlantic, and Rice on the schedule.

Only the match-up against Charlotte will be in Greenville. Throw in their opener at Michigan, followed by a home date against Marshall and another road trip to Appalachian State; it’s hard to believe that the Pirates will match their 2022 record.

We continue our East Carolina future odds preview by looking at their National Championship and conference odds.

National Championship Odds: We Have To Write Something

No amount of optimism will result in this preview suggesting that East Carolina can compete for a college football championship. Too many questions on offense, along with a secondary that gave up just under 300 yards per game through the air last season.

The oddsmakers have made East Carolina +100000 to win a title in 2023, the same odds as they had in 2022. The best odds the Pirates ever started the season with was in 2001 when East Carolina was +7500.

Conference Odds: Conference Turmoil Is Well Underway

Six new teams will join the AAC this season, as conference musical chairs are well underway. East Carolina could finish in the middle of the pack, according to the oddsmakers, with the Pirates projected to finish 6th among 14 teams (+3000). Their odds are tied with the Navy and North Texas.

As mentioned, only four starters are returning from an offensive unit that was 16th in the country with 289 yards passing per game. To make matters worse, only one of those starters comes from an offensive line that’s responsible for their high-octane passing attack. We conclude our East Carolina odds preview with a look at a wager that’s worthy of your bankroll.

Regular Season Wins: Oddsmakers Convinced of Pirates’ Fate

This is the biggest opinion the books have had on the Pirates in a few seasons. In 2021, East Carolina’s projected win total was 5.5 (over -145), and 6.5 (under -130) last year.

Oddsmakers aren’t playing in 2023, making their win total 5.5, but forcing bettors to lay -170 to take the under. There is a reason for this, and that’s because there is no way East Carolina finds six wins.

Of the nine teams on the Pirates schedule that they’ve faced in the past, East Carolina is 4-5 SU and 4-5 ATS. We think they’ll get wins against Webber State, Rice (maybe), Florida Atlantic, and Navy, but wins five and six are up in the air.

Their last four games are against teams they lost to straight-up in their previous meeting. If betting over 5.5 wins, the game against Navy will define the success of your bet.

Remember last season when the Midshipmen beat East Carolina (23-20 OT) as a 16-point dog, you can bet the Pirates do. Our recommended wager is to bet the under 5/12, even though we don’t love having to lay -170. That does it for our East Carolina future odds preview, we wish you the best this College Football season.
