Florida State vs Louisiana State Odds: Brian Kelly Era at LSU Opens in New Orleans Against FSU

LSU Heads to the Big Easy as Brian Kelly is Set to Make Coaching Debut with Tigers

Former National Powers Looking to Return to Relevance

There was a time when Florida State and Louisiana State would be coming into the season as ranked opponents with national title aspirations. Now they are just two programs trying to return to the days when they were major players on the national scene.

Florida State was just ninth in the ACC in total offense while LSU ranked 12th in offensive yards per game among SEC teams so becoming more explosive on that side of the ball is a major priority.

Florida State (+2800) is tied for seventh in the odds to win ACC while Louisiana State (+6600) is tied for eighth in the odds to win the SEC. Perhaps it is the reputation of the SEC that has the Florida State vs Louisiana State odds favoring the Tigers.

LSU is 6-4 in one-score games over the last two seasons while Florida State is 4-5 in those contests during the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Florida State Seminoles

It is hard to know what to make out of Florida State’s 47-7 season-opening win over Duqeunse, a Football Championship Subdivision program. It could be a tougher deal with the Florida State vs Louisiana State odds favoring LSU on Sunday.

The Seminoles ran for more than 400 yards with sophomores Treshaun Ward, Trey Benson, and Lawrace Toafili all running for more than 100 yards. They combined to average 8.8 yards per carrying and four touchdowns.

Quarterback Jordan Travis wasn’t asked to do much against Duquesne as he was 11 of 15 for 207 yards. He ran for a touchdown.

Albany transfer Jared Verse had 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack in his FSU debut.

The 638 yards of total offense are the most for a Florida State team since rolling up 654 yards against Syracuse on Nov. 19, 2016. We’ll see how the offense looks when the level of competition increases.

Louisiana State Tigers

Kelly has two losing seasons in his 31 years as a collegiate head coach with 12 campaigns of at least 10 wins. He has some work to get LSU to that point. Kelly led Notre Dame to season-opening wins in each of the last five seasons including a 41-38 win over the Seminoles in 2021. The Florida State vs Louisiana State odds is favoring Kelly to add another season-opening victory.

LSU lost leading rusher Tyrion Davis-Price (1,003 rushing yards, six touchdowns) to the NFL while second-leading rusher Corey Kiner transferred to Cincinnati.

LSU added former Arizona State starting quarterback Jayden Daniels while last year’s starter Max Johnson headed to Texas A&M.

The top five receivers – Kayshon Boutte, Jaray Jenkins, Jack Bech, Malik Nabers, and Brian Thomas are all back. Boutte was on pace for a huge season with 38 catches and nine touchdowns in the first six games of the season before missing the final seven games.

LSU lost three starters on the offensive line including NFL draft pick Ed Ingram.

Second-leading tackle Micah Baskerville (83 tackles, nine tackles for loss) tops the list of returning players on defense. Defensive end BJ Ojulari (53 tackles, 11Β½ tackles for loss, seven sacks) is being touted as a potential first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
