Injured Quarterbacks to Impact Florida State-Florida Clash

The Florida State vs Florida Preview has the Visiting Seminoles Favored to Beat Florida Again

Both Starting Quarterback Suffered Season-Ending Injuries in Week 12

When the schedule came out, this was expected to be a matchup between quarterbacks Jordan Travis of Florida State and Florida’s Graham Mertz. Instead, the Florida State vs Florida preview has turned into the Tate Rodemaker and Max Brown show.

Both starting quarterbacks were injured in games last week. Travis suffered a leg injury, while Mertz injured his collarbone. The injury to Travis is a bigger deal since Florida State is fighting for one of the four spots in the College Football Playoff field and a Heisman Trophy candidate.

Rodemaker has five touchdown passes and no interceptions this season, while Brown is 10 for 12 with 42 rushing yards.

When looking at the NCAA football odds, Florida State has gone from being favored by 10.5 points to being a 6.5-point favorite since it was revealed that Travis won’t play again this season.

Along with the injury to Travis, offensive lineman Maurice Smith and receiver Hykeem Williams are both questionable for Florida State.

For Florida, tight end Jonathan Odom (9 catches), offensive lineman Austin Barber, and linebacker Jack Pyburn (17 tackles) are all questionable.

Florida State snapped a three-game losing streak to Florida with a 45-38 win in 2022.

When looking at the college football standings, Florida State clinched the regular-season title in the ACC, with Florida tied for fourth in the SEC East Division.

Florida State dropped from fourth to fifth in the latest College Football Playoffs ranking. The Seminoles also went from fourth to fifth in the Associated Press poll and are still fourth in the American Football Coaches Association poll.

When looking at the championship odds, Florida State has dropped to eighth at +3300 in the odds of winning the national title.

Next Man Up for the Seminoles

Florida State didn’t average more than 40 points per game by having just one player on offense. The rest of the Seminoles will need to show that this was not a one-player team.

Running back Trey Benson is tied for third in the ACC with 11 touchdown runs to go with 6.4 yards per carry, while top 2024 NFL Draft prospect Keon Coleman leads the ACC with 11 touchdown receptions.

The key could be getting through the first quarter since Florida State ranks in the top 10 in points scored among Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the second, third, and fourth quarters. The Seminoles are also the hardest team to score against in the fourth quarter. Keep that in mind regarding the Florida State vs Florida preview.

The total has gone over in 10 of Florida State’s last 14 games.

Gators Struggle To Seal The Deal

Things were looking pretty good when Florida took down Tennessee in Week 3. However, the first game coming off the bye was a 23-point loss to Georgia, followed by losses by three points to Arkansas, and two weeks later came a two-point defeat at the hands of Missouri.

Florida could easily be sitting in second place in the SEC East Division instead of being ahead of only Vanderbilt in the division standings.

It hasn’t helped that Florida ranks outside the top 50 in both scoring offense and scoring defense, and it would be difficult to find one thing that the Gators do at an elite level. That could factor into the Florida State vs Florida preview.

Florida has covered in just four of its last 12 games.

Last Meeting

The 2022 game was tied 7-7, 14-14, 21-21, and 38-38 before Trey Benson‘s 17-yard scoring run with 4:06 left to play put Florida State in the lead for good.

The game went over the 58-point total on a touchdown pass by Travis with 2:28 left in the third quarter.

Both teams went over 450 yards of total offense and were a combined 17-for-32 on third downs.

Florida State vs Florida Betting Preview

A win would make the season for the Gators. Florida is 4-1 at home, so anything is possible.

The second-string quarterbacks will both look to get off to good starts. Remember that Florida State is second in the ACC in quarterback sacks, while Florida has recorded the fewest number of sacks among SEC squads.

Four of the last five games between Florida State and Florida have gone over the total. The 50-point total is the lowest in this series since 2017.

The home team has won the last three games between Florida and Florida State.

Florida State is 5-5 against the spread as a favorite this season and 2-2 as a road favorite. Florida has covered in just two of six games as the underdog. The Gators are 1-0 against the college football betting lines as a road underdog.

The temperature is expected to be in the high 60s at the time of the opening kickoff, with cloudy but dry conditions.

The injuries to the starting quarterbacks have led to a bit of the unknown heading into this game. Still, go with undefeated Florida State to take care of business and head into the ACC championship game against Louisville with a perfect record.
