Iowa St. Cyclones 2023 Future Odds: National Championship, Conference, Regular Season Wins and Player Props

Iowa State's Offense Will be Key to Success

The Iowa State Cyclones suffered their first losing college football season since 2016 last year and are out to make amends. Iowa State’s defense returns plenty of faces and should be solid once again. But the 2023 Iowa St. Cyclones stats have to be better offensively for the team to finish above .500 and return to a bowl game.

Cyclones Season Wasn’t as Bad as Record Indicates

Last season’s 4-8 record was certainly a disappointment for Iowa State. But the Cyclones didn’t play as bad as that record looks. Six of Iowa State’s losses were by a touchdown or less. There was a seven-point loss to No. 17 Baylor, a one-point loss to No. 20 Kansas State and a three-point loss to No. 22 Texas over the span of four weeks. The NCAAF scores didn’t go Iowa State’s way, but the Cyclones had their chances.

Head coach Matt Campbell made some coaching changes following last season’s dismal record. Former Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase has been promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The status of quarterback Hunter Dekkers is up in the air right now due to the allegations involving online sports gambling among Iowa State athletes. Dekkers threw for 3,044 yards and 19 touchdowns last season.

Rocco Becht, JJ Kohl and Butte College transfer Tanner Hughes will vie for playing time if Dekkers is unable to play. Whoever is behind center will have a decent offensive line blocking for them. The Cyclones have to replace Xavier Hutchinson at wide receiver, but have Jaylin Noel and Dimitri Stanley returning. Tight end DeShawn Hanika had four touchdown receptions on the year.

Iowa State shared the football among its running backs, so no one player put up big stats. The 2023 Iowa St. Cyclones stats will probably feature more of the same with Jirehl Brock, Cartevious Norton and Eli Sanders getting carries.

Iowa State will live and die with its defense. The college football defensive rankings had Iowa State No. 4 in total yards allowed per game. The Cyclones allowed just 285.6 yards per game in 2022. The strength of the Iowa State defense will be the secondary. The Cyclones will be tough against the run with tackles Isaiah Lee, JR Singleton and Tyler Onyedim.

Getting a pass rush and replacing a couple of linebackers will be the big tasks for the defense. But the college football predictions have this unit being one of the best in the Big 12 Conference once again.

National Championship Odds: Lack of Offense Rules Out Cyclones

The Cyclones had a national championship caliber defense last season and managed to win just four games. The defense will be good once again, but without a potent offense, Iowa State will go nowhere. The Cyclones were +20000 to win last season. The odds are a little higher this year.

Conference Odds: Something Else About the Team’s Conference Chances

Iowa State was +1800 to win the Big 12 Conference a year ago and won just one conference game. So it’s not much of a surprise to see the Cyclones’ odds shoot up to +4000. The Cyclones are likely to be a better team than last season, or at least have some better luck in close games, but a conference title is probably too ambitious of a goal. Getting back to a bowl game is a more realistic target for Iowa State.

Regular Season Wins: Cyclones Can Get 6 Victories

Iowa State fell well short of last year’s 6.5 win total and now have 5.5 wins as this year’s total. The Cyclones have the talent to return to a bowl game. But they have to go out on the field and perform.

Iowa State will likely have a number of close games again due to its defensive style. This time they need to find a way to come out on top in a few of them. Games at Cincinnati and Baylor and home against Oklahoma State and TCU are games Iowa State can win if they play well.

Iowa State needs to take better care of the football after making 23 turnovers last season. The defense is good enough to overcome some miscues. But you can’t keep putting your defense out on the field in poor field position and expect to win. The 2023 Iowa St. Cyclones stats have to show improvement in the giveaway department. If the Cyclones can do that, a return to a bowl game and at least six wins appears to be a good bet.
