Louisiana State vs Florida State Odds: Tigers Favored in Orlando

Battle of Top 10 Highlights Sunday's NCAAF Schedule

The rematch between the LSU Tigers and Florida State Seminoles takes center stage as the biggest college football game of the weekend. It will be played on Sunday, so it won’t get lost among all the other games that take place on the day. Last year, these two played to an exciting 24-23 Florida State victory. That one will be hard to top, but the talent is there to do it again, with both in the top 10 of the college football rankings. The Louisiana State vs Florida State odds have LSU -2.5 with a total of 56 in this Sunday night prime-time matchup.

Jayden Daniels Looks to Build on Last Year

Daniels did everything the Tigers could have wanted in their quarterback last season. He threw for 2,913 yards and 17 touchdowns and ran for another 885 yards with 11 more scores. He’s put on a bit of weight and now is a little more than 200 pounds.

While Daniels can run, the Tigers need one of their two main running backs to step up and take control. Both Josh Williams and Noah Cain are good, but the two combined for fewer carries than Daniels had last season. Williams had six rushing scores and Cain had 10. But Logan Diggs moved over from Notre Dame and he had 822 yards with the Irish last season.

The receivers will be solid, as always and the line returns four starters. While protecting Daniels is the main job for the line, the Tigers need to run to be successful. LSU was 0-3 last year when it didn’t rush for 150 yards. The Seminoles aren’t the best team at stopping the run. But they’re not all that bad, either.

LSU doesn’t have many weaknesses in defenses. But the Tigers do have a couple of areas where Florida State will be looking to test. Mainly the secondary, where the Tigers brought in a couple of transfers to help out. But the front seven of LSU is pretty solid.

Jordan Travis Another Two-Way Threat

LSU doesn’t have exclusive rights to talented two-way quarterbacks in this matchup. Florida State’s Travis is a pretty solid quarterback himself. Travis threw for 3,214 yards and 24 touchdowns while running for 417 yards and seven touchdowns. While Travis doesn’t run as much as Daniels, that’s how the Seminoles want it. Especially with Trey Benson at running back. Benson led a solid stable of backs with 990 yards on the ground. Expect more of the same.

The biggest challenge LSU’s secondary will have is trying to cover the FSU receivers. At 6-foot-7, Johnny Wilson poses problems for nearly every team and the Seminoles added Michigan State‘s Keon Coleman among others.

One of the biggest strengths of the FSO offense is the offensive line and they’ll need to be at their best against LSU. The Seminoles were already strong before adding a couple of solid transfers, giving the team a little more depth up front.

Defensively, the Seminoles look to build on last year’s improvement and are solid up front. Jared Verse and Fabien Lovett return for Florida State and they can make plays. The linebackers are good, but not a unit that really stands out.

The unit that does stand out is the secondary, which is probably the real strength of the defense. The Seminoles had some solid holdovers and brought in some more talented players to patrol the back.

FSU 24, LSU 23 (2022)

Despite all the big-name talent on both teams, last year’s game was decided by a blocked extra point as time expired. With the Seminoles leading 24-17, FSU had a chance to put the game away. But Florida State fumbled on the LSU 1 and Daniels led the Tigers down the field in 1:20, scoring with no time left on the clock.

What to Expect

Both teams have NCAAF playoff aspirations this year, so this is a huge game. But both teams have enough big-game experience that they’ll be comfortable in the environment. Florida State should be especially comfortable at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. In their last 11 games there, FSU has posted an NCAA football against spreads record of 9-0-2.

Both teams are going to come out and try to establish the run. LSU is more dangerous when it can move the ball on the ground or through the air and you can say the same thing for the Seminoles. The teams are somewhat similar. The winner of the game is going to come down to which team does the job upfront.

Who to Bet On?

The Louisiana State vs Florida State odds of LSU -2.5 is about what you would expect. It’s a revenge game for the Tigers and while a neutral field, Orlando is a lot closer to Tallahassee than it is to Baton Rouge. Last year’s game came down to wire and it wouldn’t be a shock to see the same thing happen this year.

The Louisiana State vs Florida State odds on the total might be a shade high, but Daniels and Travis do get most of the attention on the teams. So if it’s a little high, you can see the sportsbook’s reasoning for it.

It’s hard to ignore FSU’s spread record in Orlando. But in a game that figures to be close and could go either way, it’s never a bad idea to take the points and Florida State is probably the best bet in this one.
