Status of LSU Quarterback Jayden Daniels Could Impact SEC Title Odds
What a difference three years can make. When Louisiana State and Georgia played in the 2019 SEC championship game, LSU was the undefeated team that was a seven-point favorite. Now undefeated Georgia is a double-digit favorite according to the LSU vs Georgia betting odds.
This will be the fifth time that LSU and Georgia meet for the SEC title with the Tigers winning three of the previous four matchups.
While Georgia was winning the national title in 2021, the one blemish came to Alabama in the SEC championship.
It is hard to foresee a scenario where Georgia will be left out of the College Football Playoff field regardless of the outcome this week. LSU’s national title hopes ended with a loss to ranked Texas A&M in the regular-season finale.
Georgia led the SEC in total defense for the second year in a row even with five defensive players selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft and defensive coordinator Dan Lanning taking the head coaching job at Oregon.
Georgia remains first in both the Associated Press and American Football Coaches Association polls with the Bulldogs picking up 118 of 126 first-place votes. LSU fell to 11th in the AP poll and 13th in the AFCA rankings.
The current NCAAF odds have Georgia priced at -165 to win the national title as the Bulldogs are attempting to become the first team to win back-to-back national title since the College Football Playoff system started in 2014.
Tigers Ready to Roar
LSU isn’t ranked in the top three in the Southeastern Conference in any of the major offensive or defensive categories. But in a season when 11 of the 14 SEC teams spent at least one week in the AP Top 25 poll, LSU is one of the last two teams standing. The LSU vs Georgia betting odds are not in LSU’s favor.
The season began with a certain curiosity after the stunning decision by longtime Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly to take the LSU job.
Kelly didn’t come away empty handed with a strong group of transfers joining him. That includes former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels. He has thrown for 15 touchdowns and run for 11 others as LSU won the West Division title on a tiebreaker thanks to a 32-31 overtime win against Alabama when LSU went for a two-point conversion in the first overtime rather than extending the game with an extra point. The try was good to give LSU its signature win.
New faces have also contributed on defense with former Arkansas safety Greg Brooks (53 tackles, one interception), Missouri defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo (42 tackles, two sacks), Louisiana cornerback Mekhi Garner (31 tackles, eight pass breakups) and Oklahoma State cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse (51 tackles, 11 pass breakups) joined by freshman Harold Perkins, who leads LSU with 11 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.
The college football point spreads total has gone over in four of the last five games against conference opponents.
Bennett Is Back for More
It isn’t often that the national championship-winning quarterback returns for an encore.
However, Stetson Bennett is not only back, he is playing a larger role this season. He is one of the major reasons why the LSU vs Georgia betting odds favor the defending national champions.
Bennett is attempting 10 more passes per game than he did a season ago because the defense isn’t quite as dominating as it was. He is already over 3,000 passing yards. He has thrown for 16 scores and ran for seven more. He provided a peek at what was coming when he had five TD passes and no interceptions in the two playoff games last season.
Bennett already has more pass plays of 20 yards or longer than he did a season ago.
Sophomores Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey are his favorite receivers while running back Kenny McIntosh contributes as a runner and a receiver.
Sophomores Jamon Dumas-Johnson and Smael Mondon as freshman Malaki Starks lead a rebuilt defense.
LSU vs Georgia Injury Update
Daniels (ankle) and cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse (concussion) are questionable while running back Josh Williams is probable after missing the last two games with a knee injury. Safety Matthew Langlois (leg) and cornerback Sevyn Banks (spine) are unlikely to play for the Tigers.
Georgia tight end Arik Gilbert is questionable while offensive lineman Earnest Greene (leg) is nearing a return.
Georgia has played the last four games without linebacker Nolan Smith.
LSU vs Georgia Head to Head
Louisiana State and Georgia haven’t played since 2019 when the Tigers rolled to a 37-10 win as a seven-point favorite in SEC championship game. The last game in the regular season between the teams was a 36-16 win by LSU as a seven-point underdog in 2018.
Georgia had won four of the previous six games before those two matchups.
Seven of the last nine games between the teams went over the total.
LSU vs Georgia Betting Preview
This will be just the second time in the last 13 meetings between LSU and Georgia with a double-digit point spread.
LSU is 4-0-1 against the spread in the last five games against Georgia. The total has gone under in 10 of Georgia’s last 14 games. As painful and disappointing as LSU’s loss to Texas A&M was, it should allow the Tigers to play pressure free since there won’t be a spot in the College Football Playoffs hanging in the balance.
The line opened at 14 for the SEC title game, but has since moved to 17.5. The line could move some more once more is known regarding Daniels’ status.
While Georgia is one of three undefeated teams left in the county, the Bulldogs are just 6-6 against the spread this season.
