MAC Finals: Toledo Rockets vs Ohio Bobcat Odds

Backup Quarterbacks Could Decide MAC Championship

The Mid-American Conference does things a little different when it comes to football. So it should come as a huge surprise that on a weekend when conferences are playing their championship games, the MAC has two games scheduled for the week. The college football standings 2022 didn’t have it planned. It’s just how things worked out.

The championship game between the Toledo Rockets and Ohio Bobcats will garner most of the attention this week. The Toledo Rockets vs Ohio Bobcats odds show Toledo -1.5 and a total of 55.

But a few people will be watching the make-up game between Buffalo and Akron. The Bulls need a victory to get that sixth win and find themselves on the NCAAF bowl schedule. That would give the MAC six teams with bowl eligibility.

Game of the Week

Toledo vs Ohio

Date, time (TV):

The Toledo Rockets vs Ohio Bobcats odds show the Rockets as 1.5-point favorites in the MAC championship game. The game will be played at Ford Field in Detroit. The Rockets (7-5, 5-3) won the West Division with a 5-3 conference record. Ohio (9-3, 7-1) cruised to the East title with a 7-1 conference record. This will be the first time 2017 Toledo has played in the championship game.

The Toledo Rockets vs Ohio Bobcats odds opened Toledo -4, so there’s already been some money coming in on the Bobcats. Ohio has definitely been the more successful of the teams this year, at least from a betting perspective. The Bobcats are 9-3 against the spread this year. Toledo is just 4-8 ATS on the season.

On the moneyline, the Toledo Rockets vs Ohio Bobcats odds have moved from the opening number of Toledo -180 to Rockets -125. The Bobcats were 3-0 straight-up as a conference underdog this season. Toledo was 5-3 straight-up as a favorite in MAC games this season but did lose as 14.5- and 9.5-point favorites the last two weeks.

The Toledo Rockets vs Ohio Bobcats odds have also seen a significant move on the total, which opened at 61 before dropping. Ohio was 7-4-1 in totals this season, while Toledo was 6-6.

The Sagarin college football rankings have Ohio 4.16 points better than Toledo. The Bobcats get credit for having played a slightly tougher schedule. But the key to this game is going to be the play of the quarterbacks. Both teams have a bit of a mess on their hands.

Ohio starting QB Kurtis Rourke tore an ACL a few weeks ago and is out. His backup, CJ Harris, completed 10 of 21 passes for 196 yards with one touchdown. He also ran for 65 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s win over Bowling Green. He’ll also have a few extra days of practice with Ohio last playing Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Toledo QB Dequan Finn is beat up a bit, as is his backup, Tucker Gleason. Finn has tried playing but hasn’t been nearly as effective as he was before his injury against Buffalo. Gleason has been decent even with a broken hand, which he had surgery on and a steel plate inserted.

Toledo is No. 1 in the MAC defensively and will have to be at their best with an offense that may not score at its usual clip. Ohio’s defense isn’t good, especially defending the pass, where the Bobcats allow 305 yards per game.

Other Games to Watch

Akron vs Buffalo

Date, time (TV):

Akron (2-9, 1-6) is traveling to Buffalo (5-6, 4-3) on Friday solely for the reason to give the Bulls a chance to become bowl eligible. The MAC does make money for each team it sends to a bowl game so the conference wanted the game played. It’s hard to image the Zips being too excited about it. But Akron did win its first MAC game of the year last week, so the Zips can build some momentum for 2023 with another win.

The spread has moved from Buffalo -14 to Bulls -11.5. The total has dropped slightly from 57.5 to 55.5.

The Bulls could have prevented this game from being played but have lost their last three games. The last two games have been close but a team fighting for a bowl berth has to be able to close it out. Bettors aren’t sold on the Bulls this game. The spread has moved from Buffalo -14 to Bulls -11.5. The total has dropped slightly from 57.5 to 55.5.

Buffalo is the better team if it comes to play but the last three games don’t inspire a lot of confidence. Still, Akron’s mental state entering this one is a guessing game. The Zips could very well go through the motions to end a season they likely want to forget about.
