Michigan 2023 Future Odds: National Championship, Conference, Regular Season Wins and Player Props

Michigan, Surefire Top-5 Team, Can Harbaugh Win an NCAA Title?

Michigan ripped off 13 straight wins and a Big Ten championship in 2022-23 before losing a 51-45 shootout to TCU in the national semifinals. It was undoubtedly a bittersweet finish, though one that should motivate the Wolverines to accomplish bigger and even better things this season. Once again, the Wolverines are expected to contend with the upper echelon of college football. Anything less will be a massive disappointment. Read on as we break down some key 2023 Michigan Wolverines stats in our team preview.

Harbaugh Sticking Around to Finish the Job

Jim Harbaugh returned to his alma mater almost a decade ago with national championship aspirations. Though he’s come close a couple of times, with back-to-back trips to the College Football Playoff, Michigan has yet to break through and win another title. There are myriad reasons why, but Harbaugh remains determined in his pursuit. After reportedly flirting with the NFL once again, the 59-year-old Harbaugh reaffirmed his commitment to Michigan this offseason. That should quiet some critics, as the Wolverines finally appear to have taken the next step after two straight wins over rival Ohio State. This is shaping up to be a big, if not monumental season in Ann Arbor. Michigan is one of the few programs in the country capable of winning the national championship, a preseason Top 5 team that’ll be firmly in the mix from Labor Day through Thanksgiving.

National Championship Odds: This Could be the Year

The Wolverines return a significant amount of talent from their Fiesta Bowl team, most notably quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who finally has a firm hold on the starting job. McCarthy threw for 2,719 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. He seems poised to post big 2023 Michigan Wolverines stats. A few key playmakers from the nation’s No. 6 offense are also back, including All-American running back Blake Corum. As such, Michigan has positioned itself as a legitimate NCAA championship contender. The Wolverines (+900) currently have the fourth-shortest odds on the board behind two-time defending champion Georgia (+225), Alabama (+600), and Ohio State (+600).

Conference Odds: It’s (Likely) a Two-Team Race

Michigan or Ohio State? Ohio State or Michigan? Take your pick. No wonder it’s the most talked-about rivalry in college football news. They’re the clear-cut best teams in the Big Ten. Nobody can match their depth in talent, though Penn State and Wisconsin are certainly good enough to stay in the mix. Ohio State (+160) is a slight favorite over Michigan (+180) at the moment. Penn State is a distant third on the odds board at +600. That seems about right.

Regular Season Wins: Sky’s the Limit

Michigan was pegged for 9.5 wins last year but cleared that total with ease, registering double-digit victories for the fifth time since 2015 under Harbaugh. It seems like a pretty sure bet to get there again, especially given a relatively weak non-conference slate featuring East Carolina, UNLV, and Bowling Green. The Wolverines are currently a 35.5-point favorite over ECU, per NCAAF betting lines. Outside of Ohio State, a Nov. 11 trip to perennial contender Penn State looms as the toughest test on the NCAAF schedule.

To Make Playoffs: Firmly in the Mix

The prospect of Michigan returning to the playoffs seemed more far-fetched last season. Yet, the Wolverines overcame +500 odds to join Georgia, Ohio State, and TCU in college football’s final four. Oddsmakers are more bullish on their chances this year, though the Wolverines still have slightly longer odds than a few schools, including Ohio State. As is often the case, the Wolverines’ postseason fate will largely hinge on its much-anticipated rematch with the Buckeyes.
