NCAA Football Big 12 Conference Odds: Boomers, Horns Hoping for More in Big 12 Last Hoorah

TCU Set High Expectation With Hopes for a Championship, Will Their Run Continue?

Four New Teams Join the Big 12 as Oklahoma and Texas Prepare for Final Season

Things will look a little different in the Big 12 this season with the additions of Brigham Young, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF while the clock is ticking on the departures of Oklahoma and Texas. The NCAA football Big 12 Conference Odds is upon us.

Although TCU was the class of the Big 12 a season ago and made it into the four-team college football field, Texas and Oklahoma are the teams currently leading the way in the Big 12 championship odds.

While the landscape of some of the other Power-5 conferences will be impacted by the arrivals and departures of top-10 ranked transfers, the highest incoming transfer among Big 12 schools is former Georgia receiver Adonai Mitchell as the No. 14-rated transfer according to the 247sport.com database landed at Texas. No. 15-rated transfer Hudson Card went from Texas to being in play to be the next quarterback at Purdue. Oklahoma landed former Indiana linebacker Dasan McCullough while former TCU receiver Jordan Hudson is now at Southern Methodist.

Texas did get the No. 1 incoming freshman as quarterback Arch Manning, the nephew of former Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Eli and Peyton Manning is a Longhorn.

When looking at the NCAA schedule in Week 1, the Colorado-TCU and West Virginia-Penn State are two games that stand out.

Here’s an early look at the Big 12 teams in what could be an unpredictable 2023 season.

Longhorns logo Texas Longhorns

2022 Record: 8-5 (6-3 in Big 12)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +110
Odds to win National title: +2500
Expected Win Total: 9.5 (Over -120, Under -110)

Texas will miss all-everything running back Bijan Robinson, who is now a member of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and listed as one of the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year front-runners.

The quarterback situation is interesting with Quinn Ewers currently the starter. Will he hold off the much-ballyhooed Arch Manning all season long?

Receiver Xavier Worthy and tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders should be busy once again in 2023.

Leading tackler Jaylan Ford leads the list of returnees on defense. Keep an eye on a talented group of players who saw time as sophomores.

It is not a surprise that the NCAA football Big 12 Conference Odds  lists Texas as the team to beat.

Sooners logo Oklahoma Sooners

2022 Record: 6-7 (3-6)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +325
Odds to win National title: +5000
Expected Win Total: 9.5 (Over -120, Under -110)

Oklahoma was a bitter disappointment during the 2022 season.
Former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel looks to build on a strong first season with the Sooners. Once again the NCAA football Big 12 Conference Odds has Oklahoma as a title contender.

Marvin Mims is off to the NFL so Jalil Farooq, Drake Stoops and Michigan transfer Andrel Anthony could be the top pass catchers.
Speaking of transfers, McCullough could thrive under Oklahoma head coach and former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Danny Stutsman is back after leading Oklahoma in tackles as a sophomore.

Wildcats logo Kansas State Wildcats

2022 Record: 10-4 (7-2)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +500
Odds to win National title: +12500
Expected Win Total: 8.5 (Over -105, Under -125)

Quarterback Will Howard is back as is an experienced offensive line. Perhaps that will help overcome the loss of some skill position players, most notably running back Deuce Vaughn. Malik Knowles led the Wildcats with 725 receiving yards, but he only found the end zone twice and that needs to change.

It won’t be easy replacing sack leader Felix Anudike-Uzomah. Five of the top tacklers in 2022 were juniors so perhaps the defense will be among the best in the conference again after finishing third in the Big 12 in scoring defense last season.

Red Raiders logo Texas Tech Red Raiders

2022 Record: 8-5 (5-4)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +900
Odds to win National title: +20000
Expected Win Total: 7.5 (Over +110, Under -140)

Three different quarterbacks threw more than 150 passes a season ago. It should be Tyler Shough’s show now. The running game needs to be better.

First-round pick Tyree Wilson is among the departures on a defense that had trouble stopping people. Still, this is a team getting plenty of love right now.

Horned Frogs logo Texas Christian Horned Frogs

2022 Record: 13-2 (9-0)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +1400
Odds to win National title: +8000
Expected Win Total: 7.5 (Over -130, Under Even)

A lopsided loss to Georgia in the national championship game can’t diminish an amazing season for the Horned Frogs.

Quarterback Max Duggan, receiver (and NFL first-round pick) Quentin Johnston and running back Kendre Miller are among the departures on offense.

Most of the starting defense returns as nine of the top 15 tacklers in 2022 were freshmen, sophomores or juniors.

Bears logo Baylor Bears

2022 Record: 6-7 (4-5)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +1600
Odds to win National title: +15000
Expected Win Total: 7.5 (Over +135, Under -165)

Baylor dipped into the transfer portal in an attempt to strengthen the offensive line and improve an offense that was seventh in the Big 12 in yards and points per game.

Quarterback Blake Shapen needs to cut down on the interceptions. The offense figures to be built around running back Richard Reese.
The defense had some issues and lost plenty of regulars. Is that such a bad thing? Four freshmen and three sophomores had at least 10 tackles a season ago so perhaps that is a good sign moving forward.

Cyclones logo Iowa State Cyclones

2022 Record: 4-8 (1-8)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +2500
Odds to win National title: +25000
Expected Win Total: Over 5.5 (Over -145, Under +115)

Iowa State’s defense was outstanding in 2022 in yards and points allowed per game as well as yards per play.

Will McDonald is among the top defensive players that need to be replaced.

The offense never recovered from losing quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Breece Hall and tight end Charlie Kolar to the NFL. Now top pass catcher Xavier Hutchinson needs to be replaced.

Knights logo UCF Knights

2022 Record: 9-5 (6-2 in American Athletic Conference)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +2500
Odds to win National title: +30000
Expected Win Total: 6.5 (Over -150, Under +120)

Could UCF be the best of the teams joining the Big 12?

Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee’s running ability will test Big 12 defenses. UCF could come up with more big plays in the passing game.

There are some holes to be filled on the defensive side of things.

Cowboys logo Oklahoma State Cowboys

2022 Record: 7-6 (4-5)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +2800
Odds to win National title: +12500
Expected Win Total: 6.5 (Over -110, Under -120)

The transfer portal was not kind of Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy and the Cowboys. There are plenty of holes to fill on that side of the ball.

Brennan Presley could be one of the top receivers in the conference. Who will be getting him the ball now that Spencer Sanders is no longer the Oklahoma State quarterback?

Jayhawks logo Kansas Jayhawks

2022 Record: 6-7 (3-6)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +4000
Odds to win National title: +30000
Expected Win Total: 6.5 (Over +120, Under -150)

Kansas was one of the surprises in the college football world thanks to a 5-0 start. The wheels fell off after that, especially when quarterback Jalon Daniels was sidelined. Daniels ended 2022 with a 544-yard game in a bowl loss to Arkansas. Eight of the top 14 pass catchers were sophomores, so there could be more big games coming.

Devin Neal, a 1,000-yard rusher is also back.

When looking at NCAA football scores, the defense allowed at least 35 points eight times in 2022 so that will be a work in progress.

Cougars logo Brigham Young Cougars

2022 Record: 8-5
Odds to win Big 12 title: +6000
Odds to win National title: +25000
Expected Win Total: 5.5 (Over -125, Under -105)

Jaren Hall is gone at quarterback. Kedon Slovis, who had stops at Southern California and Pitt, will take over at QB. The arrival of former UNLV running back Aidan Robbins is huge.

Ten of the 17 players with 20 tackles or more were either freshmen or sophomores in 2022.

Bearcats logo Cincinnati Bearcats

2022 Record: 9-4 (6-2 in American Athletic Conference)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +6000
Odds to win National title: +7000
Expected Win Total: 5.5 (Over Even, Under -165)

Cincinnati had some explosive offenses in recent years. There is some work to be done for the 2023 team to reach that level with most of the starters gone.

Replacing receiver Tyler Scott won’t be easy. Some underclassmen did get some work in 2022. Leading tackler Ivan Pace is among the other departures.

Mountaineers logo West Virginia Mountaineers

2022 Record: 5-7 (3-6)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +8000
Odds to win National title: +25000
Expected Win Total: 4.5 (Over -140, Under +110)

It was another sub-par season for the Mountaineers and only a 3-1 record in one-score games kept it from being even worse. Well-traveled quarterback J.T. Daniels is on the move again as he left West Virginia. Plenty of underclassmen got chances to carry the ball in 2022.

On defense, six of the top 15 tacklers last season were sophomores.

Cougars logo Houston Cougars

2022 Record: 8-5 (5-3 in American Athletic Conference)
Odds to win Big 12 title: +12500
Odds to win National title: +50000
Expected Win Total: 4.5 (Over -135, Under Even)

Quarterback Clayton Tune and receiver Nathaniel Dell are gone as Houston joins the Big 12.

Getting Donovan Smith from Texas Tech could be a huge help.
Houston was 3-4 when allowing at least 30 points last season so there is some work to be done. Most of the starters are gone, but a bunch of sophomores were thrown onto the field a season ago and that could pay dividends.
