Temple Owls 2023 Future Odds

Temple Rebuild Shows Some Promise

There was little doubt 2022 was going to be a tough season for the Temple Owls. The team proved that by finishing 3-9. But it wasn’t all that bad considering Temple played a lot of youngsters and is completely rebuilding under new coach Stan Drayton. The Temple Owls future odds are showing 2023 to be another tough season, but the most important thing is to see the Owls continue to improve.

Owls Have Higher Expectations

The expectations for the Temple Owls are a bit higher than last year. The team is facing a win total of 5.0 and the American Athletic Conference odds are also down from +10000 last year to +3500. But the Owls have to go out and show the lower odds and higher win total are justified. That begins with the offense, which left a bit to be desired at times last season.

Quarterback EJ Warner threw for more than 3,000 yards and 18 touchdowns his freshman season. The son of Kurt Warner, he should get better with more experience. He’ll have a decent collection of receivers to throw to. But he would also be helped by some sort of rushing game. The Owls ran for just 989 yards and a 3.1-yard average last season.

The offensive line has some good pieces. But whether or not they can become a good unit remains to be seen. If they do, the Owls will take another step forward offensively.

The defense wasn’t anything special last year, although they were hampered by the offense and the lack of a running game. The Owls had some short possessions last year and left the defense on the field too long. The opposition averaged nearly 33 minutes of possession per game.

The linebackers should be the strength of the defense to start. Jordan Magee, Layton Jordan, and Yvandy Rigby are a solid group. The secondary won’t be all that bad. But the defensive line has to do more to slow down the rushing game. The teams ran at will against Temple last season.

National Championship Odds: Not a Chance

The Temple Owls future odds to win the NCAA football title are the standard +100000. The Owls aren’t one of the best teams in the AAC, let alone the country. Even an undefeated AAC team is unlikely to be invited to the NCAAF playoffs.

Conference Odds: Owls Are Big Longshots for Good Reason

The Temple Owls future odds of +3500 to win the AAC shows that it’s unlikely, but not impossible for Temple to win the conference. Emphasis should be placed on the unlikely, as there are eight teams with lower odds than Temple. There are also five teams with lower odds than +700. Your conference winner should come from those teams.

On the positive side, the NCAAF schedule is kind to Temple in regard to conference play. The Owls miss AAC favorite Tulane and FAU while having their toughest games, against SMU, UTSA, and Memphis at home.

Regular Season Wins: Owls Will Need to Win on Road

A win total of 5.0 doesn’t look that impressive, at least until you remember last year’s win total was 2.5. Temple snuck over the win total last season. But it will be a little harder to do this year. Temple should win its first two home games of the season. But traveling to Rutgers won’t be easy and then the Miami Hurricanes visit. The Owls wind-up September with a road game at Tulsa. It’s a winnable game for Temple and would greatly help the team reach five wins.

But the slate gets a bit tougher, with home games against UTSA and SMU, along with a road trip to North Texas in the middle of the home games. The Owls have a home game against Navy they can win. That leaves road games at South Florida and UAB, along with a home game against Memphis.

It looks as though Temple can win anywhere from four to six games. There are about four games that can go either way that will ultimately determine Temple’s fate this season. The win total is 5.0 looks to be a solid number, so this probably won’t be one of the best college football bets. But if you have to play this one, the under probably offers the best value at plus odds.
