UTSA Is Loaded Heading Into 2023

There is no doubt that the competition will be better in the American Athletic Conference than it was in Conference USA but with 16 starters and 51 lettermen returning from an 11-win team, you can bet that Traylor will be staring at another double-digit win season.

The AAC preseason poll shows that the Roadrunners are expected to finish second behind heavy favorite Tulane. They’ll begin their 2023 NCAAF schedule with a date at Houston, followed by home dates with Texas State and Army, before heading to Neyland Stadium, to take on Tennessee. They’ll play three of their first five games on the road, with three of their last five at the Alamodome.

UTSA is expected to be favored in every conference game until they meet Tulane in the season finale, although betting could make the Roadrunners a dog in week one against the Cougars. Fifth-year senior Quarterback Frank Harris will return after throwing for 4,063 yards (32TD, 9 INT) in 2022 his versatility accounted for 4,659 yards and 41 touchdowns last season.

UTSA’s success has resulted in an incredible recruiting class to will be relied one of the nation’s top offenses even better than the 2022 version that produced just under 37 points a game. If there is one area that must see improvement it’s in their secondary after a season where they allowed 253.5 yards per game, 101st in College Football.

Overall, UTSA’s defense was 90th in the country, allowing 405 yards per game. The question remains, if UTSA is expected to be favored in all of their games, do they have a chance to play a part in the national championship picture? We continue our UTSA Roadrunners future odds preview with a look at that very possibility.

National Championship Odds: Roadrunners Knocking At The Door

Do we think UTSA is on the same level as the big boys of College Football, no is the simple answer, but if they can beat Houston and then Tennessee before a final week showdown against Tulane, we’re going to be talking about what to do with Traylor’s team if they find themselves without a loss.

In 2023, the Roadrunners are +50000 to win the national championship and are not listed as a team that has a chance to be in the playoffs, but a small wager may be fun to watch or perhaps it will die September 2nd against the Cougars. The problem is, they’ll likely have to beat Tulane back-to-back to win the AAC.

Conference Odds: Many Think UTSA Will Make First-Year Splash

Ask most that cover the AAC, and they’ll tell you that they think the conference is a two-team race with SMU proving a potential thorn for both UTSA and Tulane. The only apprehension we have is that the path for SMU (+340) may be smoother than it is for two schools that could face each other twice.

The Mustangs won’t have to face the Roadrunners or Tulane this season, making a road date at Memphis (+600) their toughest conference opponent. Last year UTSA was a +200 favorite to win the CUSA Title. When it’s over, the top of the AAC NCAAF standings appears to be a three, maybe four-team fight. We continue our UTSA Roadrunners future odds preview by looking at the program’s projected win total.

Regular Season Wins: Roadrunners Continue to Build Young Program

One of our top College Football picks comes from UTSA’s projected season win total of 7.5. Again, it’s hard to compare a team’s season win total after changing conferences, but according to the oddsmakers, there will be a small dip in victories after projecting 8.5 wins in 2022.

There will be eight teams on this year’s schedule that the Roadrunners have played in prior seasons. Of those eight games, UTSA has won six times and is also 6-2 ATS against this year’s opponents. Interesting fact, the last time the Roadrunners played Houston, Texas State, Army, and UAB (All 2023 opponents), all four games went into overtime, losing only to Houston (37-35 in 2022).

In closing, we aren’t happy that we’re forced to lay -165, but there is no doubt in our mind that UTSA will exceed their projected win total, making that one of our best preseason plays. On a game-by-game basis don’t forget that UTSA will be hoping to produce their fifth straight profitable season (29-21 ATS, +564 units since 2019). In that span, the ‘Runners are 16-7 ATS on the road (+778 units). That does it for our UTSA Roadrunners future odds preview, we wish you nothing but the best in 2023.
