NFL Perfect Season Odds: Which Team Can Go 17-0 This 2023?

The Contenders Somewhere Between Obvious and Obscure

Chiefs and Eagles Lead the NFL Odds

The obvious contenders to go undefeated (17-0) in the regular season are the most recent Super Bowl finalists: Kansas City and Philadelphia. Both are lined at 30-1 to win all 17 of their games per the NFL perfect season odds. Only one of them can do it as they face each other in Week 11. But the other contenders may not be as obvious as these two.

Chiefs or Eagles: Which Team Has Better Path To 17-0?

A quick glimpse of Kansas City’s and Philadelphia’s schedules shows a bit of a difference: Kansas City has a tougher schedule, on paper, than Philadelphia. The Chiefs have the sixth-hardest schedule based on the combined winning percentages of their opponents from 2022. The Eagles’ schedule is no cupcake either, ranked 13th.

Kansas City also gets three tough opponents to start their season: Detroit, Jacksonville, and the Jets. In fact, Detroit and Jacksonville are tied at +200 to be the first team to defeat Kansas City. The Jets, now with four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers, are next at +400.

The Chiefs also play in a challenging division. They each face the Chargers and Broncos twice. The Chargers were a playoff team with Justin Herbert last season and the Broncos now have Sean Payton as the head coach. Kansas City did go 6-0 against the AFC West in 2019.

As for Philadelphia, it opens against Bill Belichick’s Patriots. New England is a popular underdog NFL pick (+150) to upset Philadelphia and quickly end their bid for an unbeaten season. If it’s New England, Minnesota (+325) the next week could do it.

The Eagles have also not swept the NFC East since 2004 when Andy Reid was still the coach. He had just won the NFL Coach of the Year in 2002. Furthermore, two of Philadelphia’s three losses in 2022 came against division rivals.

While both Kansas City and Philadelphia have the best odds to finish atop their respective conferences, winning every regular season game is another story. Hence, the NFL perfect season odds seem like fools’ gold, especially in a 17-game slate.

The Obscure Contenders: Teams With “Easy” Schedules

The Eagles compiled a 14-3 record in 2022 partly because it played a relatively easy schedule. This year, keep an eye out for the teams from the NFC South and NFC North. The former is the weakest division in the NFL and it also plays the AFC South and NFC North, two other divisions with few elite teams in them.

The New Orleans Saints are listed at 150-1 to go 17-0. On paper, the Saints may be the best team in the NFC South. They just acquired Derek Carr, a four-time Pro Bowler as their new quarterback. But to go 17-0, the Saints will need to sweep its division like it did in 2020. This was the first and only time an NFC South team went 6-0 against the division.

Representing the NFC North, the NFL perfect season odds post Detroit as 100-1 longshots to go undefeated in the regular season. It is just ahead of Minnesota at 150-1. Detroit has never swept the NFC North and already faces Kansas City, the defending Super Bowl champions, in Week 1.

From the AFC South, the Jacksonville Jaguars may have a case of going 17-0. Lined at +8000, Jacksonville is an upstart team that is a tier above its division mates. The Jaguars have yet to sweep the AFC South though they did go 4-2 last year.

Teams That Went Undefeated in the Regular Season

In 102 NFL seasons, only four teams have gone unbeaten in the regular season. Coincidentally, these teams all won a different amount of games too. The 1934 Chicago bears went 13-0. Eight years later in 1942, they went 11-0. Both teams lost in the NFL Championship.

In 1972, Don Shula’s Miami Dolphins put together the only perfect season in NFL history. The team went 14-0 in the regular season and won Super Bowl LVII to go 17-0 overall.

And finally in 2007, Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots almost went 19-0. After going 16-0 in the regular season, the Patriots were upset by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. But to this day, the Patriots are last team to finish undefeated in the regular season.
