2023 USFL Playoff Scores: Stallions Impressive in Postseason

Birmingham Defeats Pittsburgh in Championship Game

The United States Football League consists of eight teams playing in two division. Each team plays a 10-game schedule and at the end of the regular season, the top two teams from each division advance to the playoffs. Some years, it works out just fine. That wasn’t the case in 2023, as the top four USFL teams in the league all played in the South Division. As expected, when the postseason rolled around, the 2023 USFL playoff scores went the South’s way.

Semifinals

The USFL playoffs began with the No. 2 team from each conference battling the No. 1 team for the right to advance to the title game.

Pittsburgh Mauler 31, Michigan Panthers 27

This was the most exciting of all the 2023 USFL playoff scores, as it was the only game that came down to the wire. Pittsburgh led 10-3 at halftime, but Michigan took a 17-10 lead into the fourth quarter. Pittsburgh tied the score at 17 early in the fourth quarter. The Maulers kicked a 59-yard field goal with 3:23 remaining to go in front 20-17.

It took the Panthers just over a minute to reclaim the lead on a 55-yard touchdown reception by Trey Quinn. But once again, the Maulers answered back, reclaiming the lead with 44 second remaining. That was enough time for Michigan quarterback E.J. Perry to get his team in field goal range. The Panthers tied the score at the end of regulation.

In overtime, Pittsburgh scored on its two 2-point conversions. Michigan failed on both attempts and Pittsburgh won 31-27.

Birmingham Stallions 47, New Orleans Breakers 22

The South Division semifinal game turned into the Alex McGough show, as he had 394 yards of total offense and five touchdowns. The Stallions led 26-7 over New Orleans at halftime and 40-7 after three quarters and the rout was on.

Championship Game

Birmingham Stallions 28, Pittsburgh Maulers 12

McGough threw for four touchdowns and the Stallions closed out the 2023 USFL playoff scores with a 28-12 win over Pittsburgh. The Maulers put up a decent fight before wearing down a bit in the second half.

Pittsburgh led 3-0 after the first quarter, but a pair of McGough touchdown passes in the second quarter helped the Stallions to a 14-9 halftime advantage.

Birmingham scored on its first possession of the second half to grab a 21-9 lead. The Maulers kicked their fourth field goal of the game to make it 21-12. But a missed field goal and turnover on downs prevented Pittsburgh from getting any closer.

The Stallions scored again midway through the fourth quarter to account for the 28-12 victory and repeat as USFL champions.
