The Cincinnati Bengals signed starting quarterback Joe Burrow to a record deal worth $275 million for five years.

However, Burrow injured his wrist and required surgery, pushing Burrow out for the season. But with the Bengals still in playoff contention, they turned to Jake Browning as quarterback.

Browning went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft after college at the University of Washington. He landed on the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent and stayed with the team until 2021.

By 2021, he left the Vikings for the Bengals and has been with Cincinnati ever since. However, from 2019 to 2022, Browning never saw the field in the NFL.

Despite being in the league for five years, Browning only got his first real opportunity this season.

He backed up Burrow in Baltimore when Burrow got injured in a Thursday Night Football loss. After that, the Bengals lost to the Steelers, 16-10, after an underwhelming performance from the offense.

However, everything clicked for Browning on a Monday night to begin December. He added 354 yards passing on 32-for-37 from the field. Browning earned a touchdown and threw no interceptions in a 34-31 overtime win.

That helped the Bengals get to .500.

Last Sunday, Browning carried the Bengals through a Colts team that won four straight prior. Browning added 275 yards passing and threw two touchdowns with just one interception in the win.

Now the Bengals are 7-6 and in the middle of the AFC playoff race.

Let’s take a look at the Jake Browning career stats below.

Browning’s College Career

Browning committed to Washington to play college football. He was a four-star recruit per Rivals.com and ranked as the third-best pro-style recruit in the class.

At Washington, he became the second true freshman to start at quarterback for the Huskies. He only completed 20 passes for 150 yards in the opener with an interception.

In his sophomore season, Browning started to develop. He helped Washington to a 12-2 record and earned the Huskies their first conference championship since 2000.

He recorded a touchdown on 12.2% of attempts and was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. However, he eventually got hurt that season in the College Football Playoff against Alabama and had shoulder surgery.

The shoulder surgery didn’t keep him out of playing his junior season. Browning started all 13 games and had the highest throwing percentage in college football. He also added 19 touchdowns and only five interceptions with 2,719 yards.

As a senior, Browning became Washington’s all-time passing leader. The Huskies won their second Pac-12 Championship in three years and earned a Rose Bowl invite. Browning and Washington lost to Ohio State that year. However, Browning had nearly 3,200 yards passing.

Jake Browning Career Stats

Browning’s career stats are the same as his stats this season. Although Browning began his NFL journey in 2019, he didn’t appear in a single game until this season.

His patience and attitude paid off. Now he’s got a chance to take the Bengals into the playoffs and make a name for himself. The Jake Browning career stats are underwhelming but improving.

Is Browning a Burrow Clone?

Jake Browning signed with the Bengals practice squad in 2021. By 2022, Browning signed a reserve contract but was waived before the season began on August 30, 2022. When he cleared waivers, he returned to the practice squad and signed another contract with the team on January 31, 2023.

This season, he competed against Trevor Siemian as the backup quarterback throughout training camp. Browning won that battle and became Burrow’s true backup.

In training camp, Burrow injured his calf. Many suspected Burrow wouldn’t be ready for Week 1. However, although Burrow wasn’t 100%, he elected to play anyway, and Browning didn’t get a shot to begin the season.

Burrow reaggravated his calf injury later in the season. But that didn’t stop him from competing. However, a wrist injury against the Ravens on November 16 pushed Burrow out of the starting spot.

That’s when Browning got his chance.

It took Browning a couple of weeks. But now he’s looking like a mini Joe Burrow. Browning has rushed 13 times for 77 yards. He’s also averaged 9.1 yards per attempt passing with a 75.5% completion percentage on 102 attempts this season.

The Bengals added 34 points in back-to-back games with Browning against potential playoff teams. The Bengals are currently 7-6 and legitimately in the playoff race with a quarterback who never got an opportunity until this season.

Oddsmakers aren’t buying the hype like Cincinnati fans are. The Bengals are listed at +12000 to win the Super Bowl. For context, $100 on the Bengals to win the Super Bowl would net you $12,100.

Browning isn’t the most iconic quarterback in the NFL. But we’ve seen plenty of Super Bowls with a subpar quarterback earning the trophy. Remember Nick Foles?

A $100 bet on the Bengals isn’t so bad.

Browning and the Bengals will play the Vikings, Steelers, Chiefs, and Bengals for their next four games. The Bengals are home favorites against the Vikings and could undoubtedly defeat the Steelers and Browns to finish off the season. That would give the Bengals ten wins this season.

The defense hasn’t helped out the Bengals. But Browning looks like a reliable quarterback. He’s mimicked a lot of Burrow’s movements. Look at all of the NFL players stats. The NFL has so many backup quarterbacks playing football right now. We seriously could see a backup win the Super Bowl this season. It could be Browning, after all. Jake Browning career stats are more impressive every week.
